Born on the family homestead in Clancy on Nov. 27, 1908, Isabelle was the seventh child of Albert and Ora Hersey. She was raised with her six sisters and three brothers in a three-room house on Clancy Creek Road, where the family farmed for many years. Clancy was her home and her passion and she proudly maintained a residence there for most of her life. Isabelle died Oct. 1, 2002, at Son Heaven in Helena, which had been her new home for the past year and a half. The remarkable woman who became everyone's favorite aunt was a generous and compassionate person who championed the under-privileged and under-loved. For years she looked after several handicapped adults making sure they were well cared for. She served as a trustee for one special longtime friend, Pearl Mitchell. Her younger life was marked by hardship and hard work. She attended school in Clancy and Boulder, after which she spent several years living and working in Seattle to help support the family. Isabelle met the man of her dreams in Ted Anderson, and they were married on Aug. 30, 1935. Together, they shared a great devotion to family and home and remained dedicated to caring for both throughout their marriage. Ted died in 1966. Isabelle was a life member of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary - Cory Dullum Post #10010 and also a life member of Josephine Hepner Chapter No. 89 Order of Eastern Star. Isabelle and Ted never had children of their own, but considered the four girls born to Isabelle's beloved sister, Ruth Price, as their own. Isabelle and Ruth were inseparable throughout most of their lives and lived just a quarter mile from each other in Clancy for over 50 years. Together, they reluctantly left their homes in Clancy in 1999 for Hunter's Pointe retirement home in Helena. Shortly before her passing, Ruth moved to Son Heaven. In 2001, Isabelle also moved to Son Heaven, where she resided happily until her death. Ruth's surviving daughters, Shirley Cole of Helena, Ginny Kalchbrenner of Clancy, and Penny Price of Seattle, Wash., were blessed to have Isabelle as a second mother throughout their lives. She is remembered for her firm hand but loving nature, and for churning the best butter in Jefferson County. She will long be envied for the inimitable candied sweet potatoes she made for every holiday family gathering. Isabelle spent her professional life caring for others. She worked as administrator of Alhambra Manor Nursing Home in Clancy from 1959 to 1975, and helped hundreds of residents live a better life. From 1975 until her retirement in 1981 she worked as administrator of Parkside Manor Nursing Home. After retirement she stayed involved with the elderly by regularly visiting nursing home residents, playing cards with them every week, and making sure they received the care they deserved. As she aged, Isabelle continued to amaze her family by her incredible strength. She recovered from a massive heart attack at age 85 and a broken jaw at 90 without batting an eye. Her strength made it possible for her to travel to Maine on several occasions to spend time with a previously unknown branch of her father's family. Although in her 80s, Isabelle made four "just the girls" trips to Maine, where she explored the East Coast and got to know the newest members of her family. She was thrilled with the visits and fell in love with the whole clan. Isabelle remained strong, vital and spry until the very last days of her life. She loved the color red and appreciated nice clothes and jewelry. Not one to buck a trend, she tickled the family by having her ears pierced at age 82, and last winter at age 93, decided she'd look good in a nice stylish leather jacket. She got a "black one that zipped" for her birthday and wore it proudly. People in the Clancy and Helena area will remember "Auntie Bay" for many years to come for all she gave and all she stood for. Her strength, her spirit, and her loving nature made her a blessing to her family and her community. She will be deeply missed. She is survived by her brother, Bill (Kay) Hersey of Lompac, Calif., and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Clancy Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday with the Rev. Nancy Slabaugh-Hart and Lowell Bartels will officiating. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that people do something kind for an elderly person and for each other, or give to the Farm-in-the-Dell Foundation, 1208 Poplar, Helena, MT 59601. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hagler-Anderson Mortuary.
