She was the daughter of the late Atticus Mixson and Rosalie Ulmer Mixson of Yemassee. She was married to the late Jackson Cauthen Guess. She lived in Yemassee most of her life and was a charter member of Yemassee Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. After moving to Sumter in 1995, she joined First Baptist Church and was a member of the Fellowship Class where she developed many cherished friendships. Mrs. Guess worked for The Bank of Yemassee for almost 30 years. She served as bank manager, loan officer and later was on the Board of Directors for 11 years. Mrs. Guess is survived by 3 daughters, Sandra Hensley Lyons of Beaufort, Janice Guess Stavrou and her husband Dr. W. Strat Stavrou of Sumter and Barbara Guess Stafford and her husband Charles E. Stafford of Lexington; 8 grandchildren: Audra Lyons Powell, Allison Lyons Pelfrey, Megan Lyons, Strat Stavrou, Jr., Jackson Stavrou, Cauthen Stavrou, Caroline Stafford and Chas Stafford. There are 4 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Mary Anne Drew (Mrs. Cauthen) of Walterboro and a brother, James Atticus Mixson of Yemassee. The family would like to thank Carolyn Spell for her loving care and devotion during their Mother's lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Yemassee Baptist Church in Yemassee, conducted by Rev. John Roland and Rev. Tony Howell and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton. Burial will follow in the Ebenezer Cemetery near Yemassee. Friends may call Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, 300 Mulberry St., Hampton, SC 29924 and Thursday morning prior to services. An additional memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Sumter, SC.
