RESPECTED MAN DIES MONDAY Hebbardsville, O., Sept. 10 -- Israel Crossen, aged 73, one of Alexander township's best known and highly respected citizens, died Monday morning at 11 o'clock. He was taken sick Saturday evening with heart trouble and died Monday morning. A wife and four children survive him. The children are W. E. Crossen of Hebbardsville, Mrs. Hattie Gift of Louisville, Ky., E. A. Crossen of Topeka, Kan., and R. J. Crossen of Columbus. The funeral will be held at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, at Hebbardsville, but the date of the funeral cannot be definitely decided upon until children are heard from. (The Athens Messenger, Tuesday, September 10, 1907) Israel Crossen was born in Pennsylvania, and when a small boy emigrated to Ohio with his parents, Jacob and Mary Crossen, who settled on a farm in Lee township, Athens county, where they reared a family and died a ripe and honored old age. The family went overland to their western home and lived in their wagons while the cabin house was being constructed. October 23, 1856, he was united in marriage with Mary, daughter of the late Richard Drake. They reared five children. The wife and four of the children survive, W. E. Crossen, of Hebbardsville; R. J. Crossen, of Columbus, O.; Mrs. L. A. Gift, Louisville, Ky., and E. A. Crossen, of Topeka, Kansas. A daughter, Mrs. Jennie Wingett, died in Kansas one year ago. About 16 years ago Mr. Crossen succeeded the late J. L. Wilson as superintendent of the Hebbardsville cemetery, and bought the Drake homestead adjacent which he owned at the time of his death. A few years ago he turned over the active part of the cemetery work to his son, W. E. Crossen, and bought him a home in Hebbardsville where he died September 9th, 1907, aged 73 years. He served in the 141st O.V.I. during the war of the rebellion and in military, as in civil life, his record was without blot. For several years he was afflicted with neuralgia and heart disease. September 7th he suffered a severe attack, and on the 0th inst. he passed peacefully away. The funeral took place from the Hebbardsville Cumberland Presbyterian Church, of which he was a member in good standing, on the 11th inst., and the remains were interred in the cemetery he so long had charge of. Rev. F. M. Moore, of Albany, pastor of the church, officiated at the funeral services. Israel Crossen leaves an enviable record. He was honest and upright before God, and his gentle manner toward his fellows made him an exception among men. (The Athens Messenger, Thursday, September 19, 1907)
