Description	:	Iva was a resident of Crawford for over 70 years. She passed away at the Hoffman Rest Home there on a sunday morning at the age of 94 years, 7 months, and 27 days. Iva was the daughter of William Gillen Barnes and Hanah Ann Castro Barnes and was born Oct 17 1864 on a farm three miles west of McComb Ill. Read More	Iva was a resident of Crawford for over 70 years. She passed away at the Hoffman Rest Home there on a sunday morning at the age of 94 years, 7 months, and 27 days. Iva was the daughter of William Gillen Barnes and Hanah Ann Castro Barnes and was born Oct 17 1864 on a farm three miles west of McComb Ill. When she was five the family left Illinois in two covered wagons and moved to Nevada, Missouri, where they engaged in farming until 1878 when they moved to Nebraska near Fall city. Her mother died leaving eight children, five of them under eight years of age. Iva, the oldest, became houskeeper and mother to the children. In 1886, Mr. Barnes moved to Dawes County and filed a homestead on West Ash Creek east of Crawford and the family came the next year. On March 2, 1890 Iva was married to Joseph Granville Akes, who had a homstead and tree claim north of Crow Butte, where they endured the harships of the early pioneer. In 1907 they sold the farm and moved to Crawford because of the failing health of Mr. Akes. He passed away September 2nd 1910. Iva Continued to live in Crawford and joined the Christian church in Chadron in 1912. She was the last one of the Charter members of the Crawford Rebekah Lodge No. 128, which was organized June 22nd, 1899 and served as Chaplain until her health would not permit her to attend. She had the honor of receiving the degree of Chivalry and was presented with a jewel at the State assembly at Lincoln, October 17 1928. she was very active for her age and enjoyed life.
