Ivan Bernard Coleman was born to Ernest J. and Blanche S. (Chapman) Coleman in the Point Pleasant area of Jackson County, Kan., near Hoyt on Nov. 28, 1919, the oldest of four children. He died at Life Care Center of Greeley, Colo., on Oct. 7 at the age of 88. In 1921 he moved with his parents to Texas County, Okla., near Elkhart, Kan. In 1931 he moved to Boulder, Colo. He attended Baseline School for two years and then Boulder Prep School for three years, graduating in 1936. In September of 1937 he enrolled at Friends University in Wichita and attended there for three semesters. In 1940-41 he farmed near Deer Trail, Colo., staying with his Grandpa and Grandma Chapman.
In January of 1942 he joined the Army and served in the infantry for six months before transferring to the Army Air Corps. He was commissioned a second lieutenant at Laughlin Field in Del Rio, Texas, where he was a pilot instructor for the B-26.
On July 16, 1944, he married Elsie Blanche Stoll at the First Baptist Church in Del Rio. After his honorable discharge Jan. 19,1945, they moved to Boulder, where he took over the dairy operation on his Grandma and Grandpa Chapman's place. While living in Boulder two daughters were born, Viola on Oct. 14, 1946, and Anna on Jan. 2, 1949. In 1948 he enrolled at Colorado A & M (now Colorado State University) and graduated with honors with a bachelor's degree in agriculture.
In 1954 the Colemans bought a farm south of Fort Collins where they lived for 29 years. Two more daughters were born to them, Sharon on Nov. 8, 1955, and Janice on Dec. 17, 1957. They operated a dairy farm, grew corn and alfalfa, had a Black Angus cattle operation, and had a 3 1/2-acre Christmas tree plantation.
In 1983 they sold their farm in Fort Collins and moved south of Kersey, Colo. During their retirement they traveled in the United States and overseas to Europe, Hawaii and Australia.
Mr. Coleman was a member of the LaSalle Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Diamond View Estates in Dighton; three daughters, Viola (Hawthorne) Weller of Great Bend, Sharon Holifield and husband Holly of Sheridan, Wyo., and Janice Lockman and husband Steve of Dighton; a son-in-law, Enrique Velazquez; a brother, Everett Coleman and wife Shirley and sister Verda Oram, all of Boulder, Colo.; eight grandchildren, Dr. Marshall Holifield and wife Andi of Rochester, Minn., Christopher Hawthorne of Lawrence, Eric Holifield and wife Kristi of Sheridan, Wyo., April Hawthorne of Washington, D.C., Dr. Heather Dobbs and husband Dan of Charlottesville, Va., Jennifer Adams and husband Robby of Kersey, Colo., Brian Lockman of Hays and Sarah Holifield of Laramie, Wyo.; two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Natalie Holifield of Rochester, Minn.; nine nephews and eight nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Anna Coleman Velazquez, and a grandson, Marco Velazquez, a son-in-law, Dale Weller, a brother, Frank Coleman, and a sister-in-law, Edith Coleman.
Services were held Oct. 10 at the First Presbyterian Church of LaSalle, Colo., with the Rev. Chuck Laird officiating. Interment was at Green Mountain Cemetery in Boulder.
