Several boys in 2 or 3 cars were returning from a birthday party and taking some of the other boys home. They all went below town to turn, and in making the turn just below Mrs. Ruthie Collins’ place the one car driven by the Rexrode boy went out of control, hit a pole, and somersaulted into the river. The driver was killed almost instantly. Raymond Ritchie was pinned beneath the car for a time but the quick work of the occupants of the other car, which had already made the turn, saved him. His brother, Robert Ritchie, and Jimmy Swecker were also in the water and all suffered from shock, exposure, and minor lacerations. The younger Ritchie boy Raymond, was unconscious for almost two hours and possibly has some fractured bones. The group of rescuers in the other car were Harold Newman, Bobby Swecker, and Joe Waybright. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, February 1st, at Union Chapel with Rev. R.L. Nuckols and Rev A.E. Johnson officiating. Highland Recorder February 4, 1949 Ivan Carl Rexrode, son of Clyde C. Rexrode and the late Ollie Simmons Rexrode, was born February 15, 1932. He was a pupil of the Blue Grass High School, a member of the Blue Grass 4-H Club, and a good "chum” with all of his associates. He is survived by his father, one brother, Clyde Jr., one sister, Mrs. Oscar Bennett, and a host of relatives and friends. His funeral service was held from the Union Chapel Church in the Blue Grass valley February 1, at 11 o’clock, a.m. The Rev. R.L. Nuckols of the Methodist Church assisted by the Rev. A.E. Johnson of the Presbyterian Church, conducted a very appropriate service. Highland Recorder February 11, 1949 In speaking of Ivan Rexrode, sixteen years old resident of Blue Grass who was killed in an automobile accident near Blue Grass, County Agent E.B. Jones, Jr. said that his death, the county has lost one of its most promising young farmers. Not only had he taken a deep interest in the farm operated by his father Clyde Rexrode, but was an outstanding member, of the county 4-H organization. His fat lambs won the county Fat Lamb Championship in 1947 and at the time of his death he was engrossed in a calf feeding project.
