Read More	Lieutenant Colonel Ivan J Strommen, 83 Rapid City Journal, The (SD) - Thursday, December 11, 2003 RAPID CITY - Ivan J. Strommen, 83, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, at the Alzheimer's Unit of Bella Vista Nursing Home, Rapid City. Ivan was born in Aberdeen, SD, on November 23, 1920, to Sivert C. Strommen and Minnie F. (Monson) Strommen. He attended elementary school in Lily and graduated from Lily High School in 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and was assigned to the Army Air Corps. During WW II, he was a member of a B-29 Aircraft Crew stationed in the Marianas Islands. He flew 31 combat missions over Japan. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, The Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters and various other awards and citations. He was discharged in August of 1945. He attended Northern State College in Aberdeen from 1945-1947, majoring in Business Administration. In October 1947, he began employment with Northwestern Public Service as a Division Accountant at Webster. He also joined the SD National Guard at that time. He married the love of his life, Norma Jeske, on December 18, 1949. Ivan, as member of the SD National Guard, was called to active duty in September 1950 to serve during the Korean War. He was stationed in Alaska. When released from active duty in 1952, he resumed his position with NWPS while remaining in the Guard. He retired from the military in 1980 after 36 years of service with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. At NWPS in Madison and Huron, Ivan held several management positions and retired in December 1985, as Vice President - Corporate Services after more than 38 years of service. During his life Ivan was involved in many organizations. He served as president of the Madison Chamber of Commerce, the Huron Chamber of Commerce, and of the Greater South Dakota Association where he served on the board for 20 years. He also held Directorships of Madison United Charities, Huron United Fund, and Huron Development Corporation. He was a past member of the Dakota State College Advisory Council, the SDSU Advisory Council, the USD School of Business Advisory Council, and the SD Department of Labor Employer Advisory Committee. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Huron where he held various offices including the presidency. He also belonged to The Gideons International, Kiwanis International, American Legion, and Reserve Officers Association. He is survived by his wife, Norma, Rapid City; six children: daughter Joan Ferro and her husband Joseph, Denver; sons Jerry Strommen, John Strommen and wife JoAnn, Jeffrey Strommen, Gregory Strommen, all of Rapid City; and Richard Strommen, Dallas, Texas; three grandsons Samuel, Jeremiah & Joshua Strommen, all of Rapid City; and two sisters Mrs. Militon (Alvina) Jeske, Webster, SD, and Mrs. Glenn (Delores) Gulsvig, Bloomington, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Gladys Jeske and her husband Wesley, and brother-in-law Milton Jeske.
