Read More	Montezuma Republican (Montezuma, Iowa) 20 August 2003 IVAN "RED" ICENBICE, 71 Ivan J. "Red" Icenbice, 71, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Knoxville. His funeral was Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Bates Funeral Chapel, Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boertsma officiating. Burial was at the Golden Rod Cemetery, Deep River, with graveside military rites given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. Red was born May 16, 1932, southeast of Deep River in Poweshiek County, the son of Ernest L. and Beryl A. Hopwood Icenbice. He attended Salem country school and graduated from the Deep River High School in 1959. (My comment, this must be a mistake. It must of been 1949 maybe) On Jan. 15, 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served two tours of duty in Korea abroad the USS Epping Forest LSD-4 with the 7th Fleet Amphibious Forces, earning the Korean Service Medal with four campaign stars and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. He later served a tour of duty with the LSD-4 in Vietnam, taking part in the "Passage to Freedom Operation" in 1954 and was honorably discharged in December, 1954, as a Petty Officer Second Class. On Nov. 29, 1953, he was united in marriage to Patricia Anne Lane at Vallejo, Calif. He farmed the family farm east of Deep River, and sold and applied agricultural chemicals and fertilizer for Audas Supply Co. of Montezuma. In 1973, he sold out of farming, lived in Montezuma, then moved to Oskaloosa where he started an excavating, sewer, and plumbing contracting business, which he and his sons operated until poor health forced his retirement in 1985. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Deep River, the V.F.W. and American Legion of Oskaloosa, and Lafayette Lodge No. 42 A.F. & A.M. He was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed fishing in Iowa, Minnesota, and Canada, as well as deer hunting in Wyoming, Iowa, and Missouri until his health failed. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Doonan of Oskaloosa; two sons, Ernest and Everett Icenbice, both of Oskaloosa; a daughter, Carol Lujan of Rio Rancho, N.M.; two grandchildren, Christopher and Sonja Lujan; a brother, William (and Ida Mae) Icenbice of Sigourney; and a niece, Susan Stull, and a nephew, Roger Icenbice. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sheila Icenbice in 1972; an infant brother, Floyd; and a nephew, James Icenbice.
