Description	:	Ivan passed away Friday, June 5, 2015 at the age of 86. He was born on April 21, 1929 to Herman Emil "Babe" and Mabel Irene (Fish) Schoenrock in Platte, SD. He attended Forbes Country School through the 8th grade, assisted his father on the family farm and then started his service in the US Army on November 30, 1951. He was born on April 21, 1929 to Herman Emil "Babe" and Mabel Irene (Fish) Schoenrock in Platte, SD. He attended Forbes Country School through the 8th grade, assisted his father on the family farm and then started his service in the US Army on November 30, 1951. During basic training in Fort Riley, KS he also earned his GED. While serving in Korea, on October 18, 1952 a motor shell hit a rock and exploded. The shrapnel left Ivan with a severe head injury and made a dent in the rifle he was carrying. After being transferred many times, he was admitted to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. Over the course of a year, he underwent many surgeries for his head injuries as well as extensive therapy to regain his ability to speak, walk, eat and read. He suffered hearing loss in his right ear, a broken jaw and memory loss. Ivan received the following commendations during his time of service: The Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal, Bronze Star and the United Nations Korean Service Medal. After his honorable discharge as Private First Class in November of 1953, he returned home to continue his career in farming. On March 21, 1954 Ivan was united in marriage to Barbara June Walz of Vermillion, SD at the Olive Presbyterian Church in Platte. Together they farmed near Platte for over 25 years until 1980 when they had a farm sale and moved into town. To this union six children were born, three boys and three girls. On July 11, 2011 they became residents of Home Sweet Home Assisted Living in Platte and then relocated to Countryside Living in Mitchell, SD on January 5, 2015. Ivan died at the Platte Health Care Center Avera, where he had resided since April 3, 2015. Ivan was a lifetime member of the Olive Presbyterian Church, the Disabled American Veterans, Campbell-Timmerman American Legion Post #115, the Korean War Veterans Association, Farmers Union and the National Farmers Organization. He loved playing cards, gardening, keeping up his yard and spending time with family. Grateful for having shared in Ivan's life: his wife of 61 years, Barbara Schoenrock of Platte, SD; five children: Bonnie (Rich) Hoppe of Platte, SD, Gary (Ranae) Schoenrock of Fulton, SD, Larry (Barb) Schoenrock of Stickney, SD, Lisa (Marc) Jamison of Glenrock, WY and June (Peter) Thompson of Mitchell, SD; 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren: Jennifer (Jeff) Sonne, Trina (Tom) Olsen (Elizabeth, Marissa and Addison), Melanie (Luke) Wagner, Justin Schoenrock (Hadley and Jacey), Jessica (Seth) Severtson (Garrett and Samuel), Amber Scott (Anyuon, Alycia and Aryia), Christina Manyang (Akol), Spenser Schoenrock, Ryan Beck, Hannah Beck, Josy Thompson, Bailey Thompson and Emily Thompson; three step grandchildren: Jay (Stephanie) Burmeister, Jerin (Tara) Burmeister and Jill (Troy) Pierce; 14 step great grandchildren; a brother, Arlo Schoenrock of Platte, SD; a brother-in-law, Pat (Terri) Walz of Platte, SD; a sister-in-law, Mae (Ronnie) Easton of Mesa, AZ; along with many nieces and nephews. Ivan was preceded in death by: his son, Daniel Schoenrock; two grandsons: John Beck and baby boy Hoppe; his parents, Babe and Mabel Schoenrock; two sisters: Ellen Drake and Anna Mae Moss; a brother, Max (Becky) Schoenrock; and in-laws, Henry and Mable Walz.
