Iver married his first wife, Brita Torbjornsdatter Torblå, on June 11, 1844, in Ulvik, Norway. They had seven children, three sons and four daughters: (1) Ole "Oliver," (2) Synneva (died in infancy), (3) Torbjorn, (4) Peder "Peter," (5) Synneva "Susan," (6) Ingeborg, and (7) Martha. All the children were born in Norway except the youngest who was born in Iowa. Iver immigrated with his wife and children to the United States in 1858. Upon arrival, they traveled to Winneshiek County, Iowa, where they initially stayed in Canoe Township with the family of Iver's younger brother, Ole Olsen Børsheim, who had immigrated to the U.S. eight years earlier in 1850. Iver's family then went to stay with the youngest Børsheim brother, Magnus, in Pleasant Township who had immigrated to the U.S. in 1848. Iver bought a portion of Magnus' land where he built a house and settled into the community in Pleasant Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. Brita died about 1863, and Iver then married his second wife, Kristi Larsdatter Hoveland, on December 4, 1863, with whom he had three more children, two sons and a daughter: (1) Lars, (2) Brita, and (3) Torbjorn. In 1869, Iver and his family moved to the Sioux Falls area in Dakota Territory, settling in Split Rock Township in Minnehaha County. (His son, Torbjorn, from his first marriage, was killed in Minnesota during the trip to Dakota Territory when their wagon was struck by a train.) Iver became a member of Split Rock Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church. His surname has been spelled different ways, but the standard Norwegian spelling is Børsheim. The name underwent alterations in past centuries. The spelling variations include Byrsae, Börsem, Byrsem, Borsheim, Borshiem, etc. (The spelling on his gravestone, Borshaeim, has not been seen on any previous records.) Iver's death/burial are documented in the records of Split Rock Lutheran Church in Minnehaha County, which spell his name "Iver Börse."
