August Mester was born at Alterkieusheim, Westphalia, Germany, March 8, 1839, and passed quietly from this world Wednesday evening, December 23, 1925, at the age of 86 years, 9 months, 15 days, being well prepared for death, having received the last sacraments of the Catholic church Tuesday morning, December 22nd. June 21, 1859, he was united in marriage to Miss Regina Bock. To this union were born seven children, all of whom survive the father with the exception of one son, who died at the age six years. Mr. and Mrs. Mester and the older children of the family came to this country in June, 1873 and first settled at Mt. Vernon, Ind. The following march they moved to Westphalia, Iowa, and resided on a farm in that vicinity until March, 1902 when they came to Panama where Mr. and Mrs. Mester have since resided. Mr. and Mrs. Mester celebrated their golden wedding June 21, 1909. Their children, including their daughter, Sister M. Walburga O.S.F., were all home to help celebrate the event. Numerous grandchildren and other relatives and a host of old friends and neighbors were also present and united their efforts made it one of the happiest events in the lives of the aged host and hostess. Mrs. Mester passed from this world ten years, two days before Mr. Mester was called to his eternal home, and since his wife's death he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Joseph Zimmerman and family. Mr. Mester has been blind for the past ten years, but has been tenderly cared for by his daughter and family who have done what they could to brighten the paths for a clouded vision. His health has been declining for a number of years but his final illness dates August. Funeral services were celebrated by Rev. J.H. Fedler at Saint Mary's Church Panama Saturday morning, December 26th, and interment at the Saint Bonifice cemetery, Westphalia, Rev. William Kleffman officiating. The pallbearers were five grandsons namely: John A. Zimmerman, Henry A., Richard A., Ernest A. Zimmerman,Edwin Schell, one great grandson, Lawrence Zimmerman, son of John A. Zimmerman. The children of the deceased: Mrs. Joseph Zimmerman of Panama; Henry J. Mester of Estherville; Richard A. Mester, Portsmouth, Iowa; Mrs. Anna Schell, Harlan, Iowa; and Sister M. Walbura O.S.F., were present at the funeral, but Sister M. Walburga was unable to leave the house on account of having sprained her ankle while in Omaha on her way here from Piqua, Kansas. Another daughter, Mrs. Regina Schulte, of Bloomfield, Nebraska, was unable to be present. Her daughter, Miss Lona Schulte of Omaha, Nebr., was present. Besides the children herein mentioned Mr. Mester leaves forty-one grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn the loss of one who commanded the respect of both young and old. Among the out of town people, besides the immediate relatives, who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Gilbert Muzzelman and Miss Louisa Kaufman of Neola, Iowa; Henry Kaufman, Jake Wilwerding, Anton Koester, Henry and Pauline Schulte and Gustave Schulte and his son, Frank, of Earling; Misses Helen Monohan and Cecil Reinig of Portsmouth; and Francis Monohan of Portsmouth; Mr. Joe Rosenthal, Sr., of Westpholia; Mrs. Helen Bock, sister-in-law of Mr. Mester and her granddaughter, Miss Gertrude Blinker, of Westphalia.
