Description	:	J.B. Mallory died in Leadville, Colorado on June 18th, 1884 At 1 o'clock in the morning, June 18th, the cry of "fire" was heard. People rushed from the bars, cribs, and apartments to see flames shooting out of the building. It was empty for its grand reopening on June 20th. Mallory died in Leadville, Colorado on June 18th, 1884 At 1 o'clock in the morning, June 18th, the cry of "fire" was heard. People rushed from the bars, cribs, and apartments to see flames shooting out of the building. It was empty for its grand reopening on June 20th. Firemen quickly arrived on scene, rushed into the Grand Central Theater building, and were forced out by the thick black smoke. The firemen reported that the bulk of the fire was on the stage, engulfing the painted drops and scenes. Soon they decided there was no way to save the theater, but needed to get it collapsed as soon as possible to save the Liberty Hall and the Little Casino Saloon on either side. Two firemen, Charles Sawyer, J.B. Mallory and D.C. McCune, a volunteer, rushed inside in order to cut the great columns that held up the roof. Once inside, the roof and part of the wall caved in, trapping them in the ruble. Outside they could hear their screams for help. A black man named "Shorty" McCloud, in a gallant effort, managed to hoist a piece of the wall up, freeing Charles Sawyer. Additional rescue attempts were made by cutting a hole in the wall of the Liberty Hall, to enter the burning building. This caused the fire to enter the Liberty Hall and forced the fire fighters back to the street. From there, they could only watch as the walls caved in completely. Hooks were attached to the front of the Liberty Hall, and it too was pulled down in the hope of stopping the destructive blaze. Screams from J.B. Mallory were heard as he pleaded "if you can't get me out then just shoot me". The following day the charred remains of Mallory & McCune were recovered from the rubble. Mallory's body was shipped home to his mother in Janesville Iowa at the request of his brother C.W. Mallory. The fire was later determined to be an act of arson. - contributor Gretchen and Dana -
