He was born in Winterset, IA September 20, 1933 to Jesse and Mary (Varner) Palmer. J.D. spent most of his life in Fremont. He attended Fremont Public Schools until joining the National Guard as a teenager. At the age of 18 he began working for Union Pacific Railroad. Survivors include: wife – Edith; daughters – Marsha and husband Lynn Brown of Valley, NE, Marlyce and husband Steve Scott of Hendersonville, NC, Connie Hicks of Alliance, NE & Kim and husband Dave Blumm of Mountain Home, NC; son – Jay Palmer (Joan Filarecki) of Gretna, NE; daughter-in-law – Lori Hopper of Newman Grove, NE; sisters – Rose and husband Maynard Franke & Anna Janssen, all of Fremont, NE; 17 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: his parents; son – Kenneth Hopper; 2 granddaughters, Mandy Blumm and Jenny Miller; 1 great granddaughter, Haley Kotowski; and brother-in-law – Irvin Janssen. Graveside service with military honors will be 10:00 A.M., Thursday, August 16, 2012 at Ridge Cemetery in Fremont. Rev. Scott Jensen Chaplain, Fremont Area Medical will officiate. Memorials may be directed to the American Lung Association of Nebraska, American Diabetes Association or American Kidney Foundation." Moser Memorial Chapel, Fremont, Nebraska.
