He graduated from Gaston High School, 1941 where he was a cheerleader. He married his wife Bernice Thurston, 63 years ago on October 4, 1942. J.'s passion was farming and raising Angus cattle. He graduated from Gaston High School, 1941 where he was a cheerleader. He married his wife Bernice Thurston, 63 years ago on October 4, 1942. J.'s passion was farming and raising Angus cattle. He was an active supporter of the Delaware County 4-H program, member of the Eastern Indiana Livestock Breeders' Association, the National Angus Association, past director of the Indiana Angus Association and an officer of the Gold Medal Livestock Association. In 1986, he retired with 30 years from Fisher Body of Marion, Indiana. He was a member of UAW Local 977. J. loved being with his family and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was an upstanding and active member of his community. J. was loved and admired by his family and friends. He loved laughing, teasing, sharing wonderful memories and having fun. J. was an avid boater and water-skier on Lake Tippecanoe and Mississinewa Reservoir for 48 years. He was thrilled and proud that he was able to water ski on his 80th birthday. He also enjoyed a good game of horseshoes or shuffle board at their winter residence in San Benito, TX. J. was a life long member and trustee of the Summitville United Methodist Church. He was a 50 year member of the Summitville Masonic Lodge #691 F & Am where he earned his 32nd degree. He is survived by his wife, Bernice (Thurston) Smith and his 3 children, daughters; Vicky (husband, Robert) Reynard of Miami Beach FL, Sherry (husband, Chuck) Danner of Yorktown IN and son Jay Lee (wife, Pamela) Smith of Summitville IN. His descendents also include 6 grandchildren; Warren Lee Smith of Lake Villa, IL, Jeff (wife, Christi) Reynard of Ft. Thomas, KY, Sue Ann Reynard of North Miami FL, Brett (wife, Jamie) Pittsford of Yorktown IN, Jeff (wife, Kelly) Danner of Ashland OH and Tyler Danner of Yorktown IN, 6 great grandchildren, Anais Reynard, Grant Danner, Ethan Pittsford, Braden Danner, Mercutio Renard, Emilie Pittsford and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11 AM Saturday, April 15, 2006 in the Summitville United Methodist Church, 604 East Walnut Street with Pastor Brian Wise officiating. Interment will follow at the Vinson Memorial Cemetery in Summitville. Friends may call at the Owens-Noffze Funeral Home, 1009 West Walnut Street, Summitville from 3 PM to 8 PM on Friday and after 10 AM on Saturday at the church. The Summitville Masonic Lodge - #691 will conduct Masonic Services at 7 PM Friday in the funeral home.
