Funeral services will be held at the Free Will Baptist Bible Church at 4:00 on Sunday, August 30, 2009, with burial following in Black Creek Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home. Born August 26, 1915 in Darlington, he was a son of the late Sam and Eva Flowers Ard. Sambo grew up in Darlington and was the owner of Ard Trucking Company, a business that he founded in 1945. He married Gena Atkinson Ard in 1937. He was a member of Free Will Baptist Bible Church in Darlington, a church that Mr. Ard truely loved. Surviving in addition to his wife of 72 years are four children, Tommy and Shirley Ard, Carolyn A. Gainey, Grace A. Streett, all of Darlington, Allen (Shelby) Ard of Florence, grandchildren: Aaron Ard, Argent (Bryan) Weatherford, Jamey (Wendy) Ard, Jeff (Susan) Ard, Karla (Andy) Ard, Lance Gainey, Scott (Kylie) Gainey, Brandi (Chris) Anderson, Tara (Jon) Jeffords, Tiffany (Curry) Belk, Taylor Ard and Dale (Amanda) DuBose; and many great grandchildren. Also surviving are special daughters-in-law: Janice Ard and Carol Ard and special sons-in-law, Toby Gainey and Gene Streett. He was preceded in death by a son, Jesse Willard Ard, Jr, sisters, Sadie Garrison, Salley Jeffords, Flossie Roach Moody and brothers, Cephas Ard, Barney Ard, Holly Johnson and Bud Johnson, a daughter-in-law, Martha Ard, and a very dear friend, Newton Howle. The family will receive friends from 5-7 Saturday evening at Belk Funeral Home and other times at the home of Sambo and Gena, 416 Doneraile Street.
