Woodforde SMITH, late Deputy Provincial Secretary, died at his residence, Gibson (York Co.) yesterday morn. Mr. Smith was a victim of rheumatic gout and was obliged by failing health to retire from office in 1884. Since then he has mostly been confined to the house. He was in his 74th year. Woodforde SMITH, late Deputy Provincial Secretary, died at his residence, Gibson (York Co.) yesterday morn. Mr. Smith was a victim of rheumatic gout and was obliged by failing health to retire from office in 1884. Since then he has mostly been confined to the house. He was in his 74th year. Mr. Smith was a native of this city. He was born in the house on King Street now occupied by Sir John C. Allen as his residence. After receiving a common school education, he entered the employ of the late Judiah Slasson as clerk, which position he resigned at the time of the death of Major Brannen to accept a clerkship in the Provincial Secretary's department. He was elevated to the position of Deputy Secretary on the death of Mr. Fulton. He was about forty years in public service. Mr. Smith was paymaster of the 71st battalion from the date of its first organization till about eight years ago when he retired with the rank of captain. Mr. Smith was twice married, first to Miss MILES, sister of Odber MILES of Maugerville (Sunbury Co.), by whom he had two daughters, Lucy GREGORY widow of Dr. GREGORY and Miss Sarah SMITH. His second marriage, about the year 1872, was to Miss SCOVIL, sister of S.J. SCOVIL, banker and Walter SCOVIL who represented Kings County in the Legislature for several years. The funeral will take place from his residence tomorrow at 2:30 o'clock.
