Born November 16, 1924 in Gaffney, he was married to the late Frances Bland Millwood since May 19, 1984, and was previously married to the late Betty Broome Millwood who passed away in 1975. He was the son of the late Horace H. Millwood and Bessie Wilson Millwood. Mr. Millwood was a 1941 graduate of Gaffney High School and was a 1948 graduate of the Cincinnati College of Embalming. He owned Gordon-Millwood Funeral Home until 1954 when he became a general agent for Allstate Insurance Company and retired in 1994 after 40 years of service as Senior General Agent. He was a member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church and was a U. S. Army World War II veteran. Jack served as a board member at First Piedmont Federal Savings & Loan Association in Gaffney since 1972. He also served as a board member at Appalachian Council of Government since 1965 where he served as chairman on many committees. He was the only person of the original group still serving until his retirement in January of 2006. He received an award for his service. In the future, an award will be presented in his name annually to the person contributing the most to the organization. Jack also served on the board of directors for the Upstate Alzheimer's Association since 1989 and was active in their fund-raising and support groups. He was involved in the development of Highway 11, now known as Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway and in the development of Cowpens Battleground. He was a Lions Club member for 40 years where he was a former president and recipient of the "Lions of the Year" award. He was the former president of the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce and was elected to their "Hall of Fame" in 1983. He was the former chairman of the Palmetto Council of Boy Scouts of America and received their "Order of the Arrow and the Silver Beaver" awards. He was a Gaffney Jaycees member and was chosen as "Man of the Year" in 1953. He was the former chairman and director of the American Red Cross and served two terms on the regional Red Cross Blood Bank Board of Directors in Charlotte, NC. He was a former board member of the American Cancer Society and was the Co-founder and former director of the Cherokee County Retarded Citizens Association. He was a member of the Sertoma Clubs of Gaffney and Cherokee County and received the "Service to Mankind" award from each of the clubs. Jack received the Order of the Palmetto presented by Governor Carroll Campbell for outstanding work in County and State through the years. Jack served as coroner of Cherokee County for 12 years, and served as chairman and board member of the Gaffney Board of Public Works until 1996. He was chairman when the Board made a decision to build the "Peachoid" which was completed and dedicated in 1981. Upon his retirement a park in his honor "Millwood Park" was dedicated in his name. He also served on the Cherokee County Development Board where he was a former chairman and was the recipient of the "Volunteer of the Year" award in 1982 by the South Carolina Industrial Association in Columbia, S.C. He worked on the Cowpens National Park for 12 years to establish the battleground request for expansion and recognition. He appeared before the House of Representatives and Senate in Washington, D.C. to get this enacted. Surviving is a son, Jack Edward "Eddie" Millwood, Jr. of Gaffney; a stepson, Robert Bland and wife, Julie, of Colorado Springs, Co.; a stepdaughter, Holly Bland Sarratt of Columbia; three step-grandchildren, Turner Phillip Bland, Della Jane Bland, and Robert Edward Bland; a friend and caregiver, Susan Gary of Gaffney; special friends, Jack Allison and Dr. Frank Barnhill. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Millwood. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at Blakely Funeral Home. Interment will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at Frederick Memorial Gardens. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church with Dr. Clyde Thomas and Rev. Stuart A. Kersey officiating. A meal will be served to the family and friends immediately after the 4:00 p.m. service at the Church in the Family Life Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1449, Gaffney, S.C. 29342 or Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 1886, Gaffney, S.C. 29342 or Alzheimers Association, 901 South Pine Street, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302. The family will be at the residence, 115 Greenbriar Drive, Gaffney.
