Jack is survived by his wife, Ruth (Mitchell) Wagoner of St. Louis; his daughter, Sandra Kaye (Wagoner) Gilligan also of St. Louis; a son, Steven James Wagoner, and his wife, Elizabeth (Farmer) Wagoner of Arnold, Maryland. He is also survived by four wonderful grandchildren who loved their granddad very much. They are Sean Gilligan of Portland, Oregon; Stephanie (Wagoner) Rieper of Austin, Texas; and Victoria and Matthew Wagoner of Arnold, Maryland. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd James and Helen Maude (Tatman) Wagoner, and an infant daughter, Jacqueline. Born in Harper, Kansas on May 15th, 1921, Jack spent his early years working, learning and playing on the farms and in the schools surrounding Harper. He initially attended elementary school in a former one room schoolhouse west of town, later moving on to attend Harper Elementary and Harper High Schools. As a teenager, Jack's passions were ice cream, football, an d his Model A. automobile. Jack's love for ice cream was solidified by time spent working in his father's ice cream store. After graduation from Harper High School in 1939, Jack joined the Kansas Army National Guard and worked in Wichita for a short period of time. After Pearl Harbor, Jack enlisted in the United States Army, initially in Field Artillery. Jack eventually entered the Quartermaster Corps and was sent to attend courses at Ohio University. Since Jack was unable to obtain wartime leave to return to Kansas, Ruth traveled from her home in Wakita, OK to join him in Athens, Ohio, where they were married in 1943. Jack was later commissioned a Second Lieutenant at Carlisle barracks, Pennsylvania. At the end of the war, Jack found himself as part of the American occupation of Japan, where he was based At Tachikawa Air base, near Tokyo. He completed his military service in 1949 at the rank of First Lieutenant and returned to Harper where he entered the family's creamery and feed business with his father, Lloyd. Cited in downtown Harper, Jack and Lloyd donated the property to the City of Harper in the late 1970's for construction of the current Harper Senior Citizen's Center. They later owned and operated the former Farmer's Oil Company, with two gas pumps, two mechanics bays and four bulk fuel delivery trucks. Jack and Lloyd faithfully supported the local farm community, along with oil drilling crews, for many years, delivering fuel in all types of weather and at all hours of the day or night. Jack retired from the oil business in the late 1960's due to health reasons, moving on to a highly successful career with the State of Kansas, where he completed his working career as manager of the Wichita and Hutchinson Unemployment Insurance Offices. Jack's true joys were spending time with his family, the Masonic Lodge, and his activities with the Midian Shrine Temple and Harper County Shrine Club. Jack's bridge club evenings were never dull, and he greatly enjoyed spending time at the family cabin on Anthony Lake, boating and skiing in "lil Tinker." Jack worked hard all of his life to provide for his family, ensuring both of his children were given the opportunity to reach as far as their abilities would permit. His love for Ruth was of epic strength and character. His devotion to his church, his Masonic brothers, and to living an honest and productive life was unwavering Truly a member of the "Greatest Generation," Jack's family and friends will miss him dearly. His hard work and positive influence will carry on through his grandchildren's current and future achievements. Granddad, you leave footsteps behind to guide us all. While you are now on to the next great adventure, we will continue to love you, remember our time together, and follow your example always. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, September 30, 2006 in the Prairie Rose Funeral Home at Harper with Rev. Don Swender officiating. Eulogies were given by granddaughter, Stephanie Rieper, his daughter, Sandra Gilligan, and son, Steve Wagoner. Recorded music "The Lord's Prayer," sung by David Warbinton, "On Eagle's Wings," "An Irish Blessing," "I Don't Know About Tomorrow" were played and a slide show production by Sandra and Steve "A Celebration of Jack's Life" was shown. Honorary casket bearers were Marland Bergman, Jim Bergman, Ken ny Bergman, Bill Greve, Dick Watt, Doug warbinton, gary Puls, Robert Puls, Dennis Puls, Bill Puls, Jerry Schmitz, and the Harper Masonic Lodge #206 A.F. & A.M. Casket bearers were Larry Claflin, Mike Claflin, Sean Gilligan, Jim Gilligan, Eldon Mitchell, Drew Rieper, and Matthew Wagoner. Military Honors were presented by Ft. Riley Honor Guard and the Masonic Service was conducted by Harper Masonic Lodge #206 A.F. & A.M. at the Harper Cemetery following the funeral.
