Read More	HARLAN NEWS-ADVERTISER - HARLAN, IA - FRIDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2020 PAGE 9A Jack Ray Graeve, 64 August 20, 1956 – November 12, 2020 DES MOINES - Jack Ray Graeve, the son of Raymond and Alice (Finken) Graeve, was born on August 20, 1956 in Harlan, IA. He was baptized, received First Communion and Confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, IA. He attended grade school in Earling and then went to high school in Harlan, graduating with the class of 1974. Jack was the youngest of thirteen children, growing up on a farm north of Earling. He loved the outdoors, riding horses, fishing, hunting, and playing baseball in the pasture with his many siblings and neighbors. He served in the US Army, was stationed overseas and was a parachutist, all of which he was very proud. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he made his home in Des Moines, where he worked at a locker in the area, and then worked for the US Post Office until his retirement. Since Jack was the youngest boy, with lots of older sisters, the girls liked to dress him up. They also gave him a couple of dolls, which only Jack would name “Crunchy” and “Stretchy”! Despite this, Jack grew into a handsome young man. He was a very good artist, with a talent for sketching and drawing. As an adult, he enjoyed fishing, listening to music of all kinds, playing cards, golfing, and watching the Masters. Jack was best known for his silent laugh and quick wit. He had a knack for telling jokes and “one-liners”. Their Mom had asked him to carry in a pot of beans to a family dinner, asking him to please not spill them. Well, he did spill them. The next Christmas, Jack gave his mom the game “Don’t Spill the Beans”. While in the service, Jack wrote a letter to one of his sisters and said he had her Christmas present wrapped up and ready to send. But then, he said, the darn thing died in his wall locker. The family was in the Earling Church one day, admiring the beautiful statues and tried to name each one. There was one that no one knew the name of. Jack looked up and says, “I think it’s Shrek!”. Always quick witted, Jack was the cool uncle. He related to everyone, especially the younger generation. It was always a better get-together when brother Jack showed up. Jack passed away on Wednesday, November 12 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Mark. He is survived by his five brothers: Phil Graeve and his wife, Harriet, Defiance; Ed Graeve and wife Mary Kay, Denison; Ken Graeve and wife Dixie, Brookfield, WI; Bob Graeve and wife Sue, Omaha, NE; Neil Graeve and wife Jolene, Tucson, AZ; and his six sisters: Mary Kilibarda and husband Frank, Courtland, MN; Ann Graeve, Mason City, IA; Pat Michels and Husband Joe, Panama, IA; Kathy Foster and husband Denny, Land O’Lakes, FL; Teresa Wageman, Westphalia, IA; Rose Schomers and husband Dave, Westphalia; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. - - - - - - - - - - KNOD Radio - Harlan, Iowa - Private Funeral Services for 64 year old Jack Ray Graeve of Des Moines, formerly of Earling, will be held 11 am, Wednesday, November 25 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling with burial at the Earling Cemetery. Jack passed away on November 12th, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Survivors include his 5 brothers: Phil and wife Harriet Graeve of Defiance, Ed and wife Mary Kay Graeve of Denison, Ken and wife Dixie Graeve of Brookfield, WI, Bob and wife Sue Graeve of Omaha, and Neil and wife Jolene Graeve of Tucson, AZ; 6 sisters: Mary Kilibarda and husband Frank of Courtland, MN, Ann Graeve of Mason City, Pat Michels and husband Joe of Panama, Kathy Foster and husband Denny of Land O'Lakes, FL, Teresa Wageman of Westphalia and Rose Schomers and husband Dave of Westphalia.
