Read More	The Dalles Chronicle, November 12, 2001: Jack Robert Coffield, 85, a resident of Dallesport (Washington) and lifelong resident of Klickitat County, died Thursday, November 8, 2001 at the Oregon Veterans Home (The Dalles, Oregon). He was born October 24, 1916 in Goldendale (Washington) to George and Caroline (Miller) Coffield of Wishram (Washington). He attended school in Wishram, Goldendale (Washington) High School, and Washington State University at Pullman. While in college he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and was on the college livestock judging team at the Pacific International Livestock Exposition in Portland. His brother Donald gave him flying lessons, and at the age of 16 he soloed from a small airstrip on the Coffield ranch at Wishram Heights. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and also spent four years as a pilot with the U.S. Coast Guard. He married Pauline Rauscher on June 13, 1944 at Barnes Navy Chapel in Vancouver (Washington). Following his separation from the military in 1946 they moved to the family ranch at Wishram Heights and formed a partnership with his brother Ray. They operated the Sunnyslope Dairy, Wishram Water Works, built houses, farmed and raised cattle. In 1951 Jack and Ray built the first TV cable system in Wishram and later built the system in Goldendale. After selling the Wishram Water Works to the Public Utility District, he was employed by the P.U.D. for a brief time and retired in 1982. The Coffields moved from Wishram to their new home in Dallesport in 1992. He was an active 52-year member and a Life Member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge #303 in The Dalles and a guest member of the Honolulu Elks. He also belonged to the American Legion, the Klickitat Historical Society, and Friends of Maryhill Museum. He enjoyed boating, water skiing, and playing baseball for the Wishram Town Team and the American Legion baseball team in high school, and trips to Reno and the Oregon coast. He loved to travel with his wife to Europe, Hawaii, the Orient, Mexico and on cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska, the Greek islands, and Turkey. He was a devoted husband and father and loved dogs and horses, and was always helping others in their time of need. Survivors include his wife Pauline of Dallesport; son Mical of Spokane (Washington), his brother and sister-in-law Donald and Joan Coffield of Puyallup, Washington; nephews and their wives Steve and Linda of Las Vegas, Nevada; Tom and Lindsay of San Diego, California; Fred and Sharon of Kent, Washington; his niece Virginia Coffield of Bend (Oregon) and numerous grand nieces and grand nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Ray and Bernard. In accordance with his wishes no public services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to the Delta Wing, Oregon Veterans Home, 700 Veterans Drive, The Dalles, Oregon 97058 or to the Klickitat Historical Society, P.O. Box 431, Dallesport, Washington 98617. Arrangements were by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
