Enterprise 30 March 1939 Arlington Citizen Buried Monday The Arlington Congregational Church was crowded on Monday afternoon when funeral services were held for Jack Schlapfer, veteran employee of Marshalls Nurseries, who died at his home on Friday morning after a lingering illness. Mr. Schlapfer was born in Berne, Switzerland, on January 27, 1878, and when a youth of 19 came to American, living first in Beatrice where he was employed in the Sonderegger Nurseries. In 1905 in the early spring he came to Arlington and entered the employ of Marshalls Nurseries where he was head of the propagation department since that time. He was always a great lover of trees, having been a forester in Switzerland, and seemed to have almost a magic touch when it came to growing them. In May, 1905, he was married to Tishie Hall, and since then they have lived near here on a nursery farm. A quartette composed of Mrs. Blanche Keller, Mrs. Howard Marshall, Sterling and Wayne Plugge, sang "The Old Rugged Cross", and "Abide With Me", with Mrs. Alice Newcom playing the organ accompaniment. The ritualistic service of the Masonic Lodge was used, with Acting Worshipful Master Rhea Gilfrey and Chaplain Rev H. C. Van Valkenburgh conducting it. The funeral address was given by Rev. Van Valkenburgh, who used as his text Psalms 1, 8. A brief service preceded at the home at 1:30 o'clock and the commitment service was also in charge of the Masons. Besides his wife, Mr. Schlapfer is survived by two daughters, Miss Anna, and Mrs. Virgil Frye, and eight sons, Herman of San Francisco, California, Richard, Archie, Robert, Junior, Walter, Albert, and William, two children preceded him in death. Two sisters also survive him. The pallbearers were Chet G. Marshall, Vernon V. Marshall, Lawrence Hall, Maurice Marshall, Tom Dowell, and A. M. Steen. Funeral arrangements were in charge of Reckmeyer & Son and interment was made in the Arlington Cemetery. - Arlington Cor. * * * Obit provided by, and used with the permission of, the Wash. Co. Geo.
