Parker, 86, of Laurel, rounded the bases for his last time as he passed to our Savior, Dec. 8, 2006, at St. Vincent Hospital. Jackson was born July 22, 1920, in Laurel, a son of John J. and Bertha Graber Parker. He attended Laurel schools graduating from Laurel High School in 1938. His fervent legacy was to be remembered as a devoted husband and family man. He played professional baseball at Jackson and Greenwood, Miss., both farm clubs of the Chicago White Sox. He went to work at the Independent Refining Company in the late '30s. Jackson enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and was proud to serve on America's most decorated battleship, the U.S.S. New Jersey, flagship of the 3rd fleet under Admiral Bull Halsey and then as the flagship of the 5th fleet under Admiral Spruance. During her months of World War II service, she steamed more than 200,000 miles and shot down over 20 Japanese aircraft including five in one day. He was honorably discharged as a first class gunner's mate and turret captain. Until it became too tiresome for him to travel, he relished attending reunions of the New Jersey. He and Kathleen Marie Allen were joined in marriage Dec. 28, 1942, in San Diego, Calif. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he returned to work at the Laurel Farmer Union Oil Refinery. He became safety director of the refinery in 1971 and went on to work for Cenex Insurance Agency as a safety compliance supervisor of Cenex facilities. Jackson was an ardent sportsman. For years he was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fly fishing the streams of Montana, in particular the Boulder, Gallatin and Madison rivers. Baseball was his passion. He managed Farmers Union teams winning five state semipro championships. He was unanimously selected by sportswriters and broadcasters as the most valuable player in the Midland Empire League in 1947 and 1948. He went on to coach innumerable youngsters as the Laurel American Legion coach from 1948 to 1956. He also became an adept handicapper of horses. Later in life, his one final passion became the game of golf. He was one of the initial members of the Laurel Golf Club and for years could be seen on the course almost every day the course was playable. He was heartbroken when he finally had to give up his membership in the club due to declining health. Jackson was very community minded and served on the Laurel City Council for two terms and in 1971 received the Jaycee Community Service Award for his work as chairman of the City of Laurel Ambulance Committee establishing ambulance service to the city of Laurel and outlying areas. He also served two terms on the Laurel School District Board of Trustees. He had a long involvement in the "Labor Movement" and was one of the founders of Local 2-443 of the Oil Workers Union. He served as their president and executive secretary for many years. He also served on the National Bargaining Committee for six years and was on the executive board of the Montana State AFL-CIO. His hobbies were collecting and recording "Big Band" music of the 1930s and early 1940s. He also enjoyed making and repairing golf clubs for his friends. He was most proud of his family. His wife of 50 years, Kathleen, who passed away in 1993, and their four children, John T. (Cindy) Parker, Spokane, Wash., Colonel Patrick D. Parker, Ret., Surprise, Ariz., Shannon A. (Doug) Gratwohl, Hardin, and Sheila D. (Pete) Jalbert, Spokane; and grandchildren, Christopher, Patrick, Zachary, Aaron, Sean, Ryan, Sophie, and Jackson; special sister-in-law, Beatrice Allen of Laurel; and several nieces and nephews. Dad derived great pleasure the past three years watching his grandsons, Sean and Ryan Gratwohl carry on his baseball legacy playing American Legion Baseball with the Billings Royals/Blue Jays. He would beam with pride watching Sean turn a double play or Ryan delivering a spit ball. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Edythe and a brother, Donald. He was a member of St. Anthony's Parish. He was a superstar dad. He coached us in a myriad of things, from how to bait a hook, lay down a bunt, make a good overhand throw or hit that nice high cut shot into the green. He was always a presence in our life. With our mom, he installed solid, traditional American values which have been valuable to us as we have pursued our own lives and careers. We will deeply miss his counsel and presence. We would like to express our sincere gratitude and thanks to our Aunt Bea for her devoted attentive care of our dad. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, at Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Laurel.
