He had been in failing health since March of last year when he suffered an attack of the flu. For six months past he had been confined to his home and for fourteen weeks to his room. Death was due to pernicious anemia. Mr. Suter was born Easter Sunday, April 9, 1843. He had been engaged in the hardware business in this community for over fifty years. For a number of years he had as his business associate the late Perry S. Minshall, and following his death, Mr. Charles A. Suter became his father’s partner. He was a skilled workman, and maintained throughout his career the highest business standards. The firm through all these years has stood for honest dealings and fine workmanship. He was a splendid citizen and a fine gentleman. A great host of friends mourn his departure. He was married in Cumberland, October 13, 1865, to Miss Mary Isabelle Walker of that city. Her death on January 1, 1911, was a severe sorrow to him. His devotion to her was most marked. The following children survive: Mrs. Conrad Jammer, of Cumberland; Dr. J. E. Suter, president of the First National Bank, and Mr. Charles A. Suter, who maintains the hardware business. There are four grandchildren, Miss Mary Ivonue Jammer and Jacob Suter Jammer, of Cumberland, Miss Mildred Hayman Suter and Charles Amer Suter, of this place. Two sisters also survive, Mrs. Carrie Neff, of Cumberland, who has reached the advanced age of 82 years and Mrs. Emma Myers, Cumberland, 71 years old. The funeral service was held at the home at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon, Rev. Ronalds Taylor, rector of St. James Episcopal Church, conducting the service. Interment was in the Suter mausoleum in Philos Cemetery, Westernport. The pallbearers were: Honorary – R. H. Drane, T. F. Kenny, Jacob Hughes and J. F. Harrison. Active – C. T. Neff, Charles Kuhnle, H. Clay Shaw, H. C. Thrush, J. B. Maybury and Lewis G. Albright. The accompanying poem was a particular favorite of Mr. Suter, which he clipped from a newspaper and carried about with him, reading it over and over and often. It expresses a most beautiful view of death: It is a natural fact we fall asleep Like tired children when the day is done That I would question why the living weep When death has kissed the laughing lips of one We do not sigh when golden skis have donned The purple shadows and the gray of night Because we know the morning lies beyond And we must wait a little while for light So when, grown weary with the care and strife Our loved ones find in sleep the peace they crave We should not weep, but learn to count this life A prelude to the one beyond the grave And thus be happy for them, not distressed But lift our hearts with love to God and smile And we anon like tired ones will rest Of we will hope and wait – a little while.
