He was married to Johanna Doornink on June 23, 1933, in Sioux Center. The couple made their home on a farm west of Sioux Center for many years. They had moved into Sioux Center on January 27, only a few days prior to his passing. Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Delma Jean, at home; his mother, Mrs. Jacob Van Marel of Orange City; five sisters, Henrietta Riphagen of Grand Rapids, Mich., Irene (Mrs. Wm. Te Slaa) of Hull, Mabel (Mrs. Fred W. Cleveringa) of Sioux Center, Gertrude (Mrs. Gerrit H. Te Slaa) of Orange City, Cynthia (Mrs. Clarence W. Cleveringa) of Sioux Center; three brothers, Arie of Steen, Minn., William of Orange City and Irwin of Maurice. Mr. Van Marel was a member of the First Reformed church of Sioux Center.
