Read More	HARLAN TRIBUNE - HARLAN, IOWA - TUESDAY, APRIL 16, 2019 PAGE 8A Jacob Christopher Hastert February 25, 1931 - March 29, 2019 HARLAN – Jacob Christopher Hastert, son of August J. and Mary F. (Kaufmann) Hastert, was born on February 25, 1931 on the family farm outside of Panama. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Panama. Jake was inducted into the United States Marine Corps on February 25, 1952 in Omaha, NE. During his two years of service, he served one year overseas during the Korean War and was awarded a Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Upon receiving his honorable discharge on February 24, 1954, Jake returned home to Iowa. On February 27, 1954, he was united in marriage to Agnes Cecelia Freund at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama. Seven children were born to this union. After their marriage, Jake and Agnes made their home on a farm near Westphalia where they raised their family. Jake was an active member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church and was a board member of the Farm Service Coop for many years. After farming for nearly 40 years, in 1993, Jake “semi” retired and moved with Agnes to Harlan where they became members of St. Michael’s Catholic Church. During his lifetime, Jake took immense pride in his farm. He worked tirelessly raising chickens, farrowing hogs, milking cows, making hay, and planting and harvesting the crops. Everyone knew if they needed to find Jake, to go to the farm; as he was caring for the livestock and the land as God had planned. He also enjoyed traveling with Agnes, going to his kids and grandkids activities, visiting with anyone that stopped by, and playing cards with family and friends. In January of 2019, Jake made his last home at the Elm Crest Retirement Center in Harlan and this is where he died on March 29, 2019 having attained the age of 88 years, one month and four days. In addition to his parents, Jake was preceded in death by his wife, his son Paul, his brothers; Pete, George, and Chris and his sister; Alice Esser. Jake is survived by his children: Robert “Toby” Hastert and his wife Tammy of Harlan; Richard Hastert and his wife Deborah of Harlan; William Hastert and his wife June of Harlan; Linda and her husband Randy Terpstra of Hawarden; Timothy Hastert of Harlan and Mary and her husband Stuart Oden of Wahoo, NE; 13 grandchildren (Ross, Jeff, Jason, Melissa, Megan, Anna and Ashley Hastert; Amanda Carter, Rebecca Blair, Travis and Lindsey Terpstra, Nick and Morgan Oden); six great grandchildren (Sierra and Emily Carter, Addison and Nora Blair, Alivia Hastert and Corten Hastert); sisters Anna Rueschenberg of Westphalia, and Rita Finken of Harlan; brother Joe Hastert and his wife Georgianna of Panama; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. A 10:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Rev. John Frost on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. Sierra Carter, Addison Blair, Alivia Hastert, Emily Carter, Nora Blair, and Corten Hastert served as honorary casket bearers. Ross Hastert, Jeff Hastert, Amanda Carter, Rebecca Blair, Jason Hastert, Melissa Hastert, Megan Hastert, Travis Terpstra, Lindsey Terpstra, Anna Hastert, Ashley Hastert, Nick Oden, and Morgan Oden served as casket bearers. Military Rites were conducted by Defiance Westphalia American Legion Post No. 707 at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia. Jake is the son of Gus and Mary Kaufmann Hastert of Panama and Agnes' parents were Hennan and Christina Mumm Freund of Panama. He is a Korean War Veteran having served with the Marines. Jake and Agnes are the parents of seven children: Robert (Toby) of Harlan, married Tammy Sibenaller of Earling: children: Ross and Jeff; Richard of rural Harlan, married Deborah Musich, children: Amanda and Rebecca; William of rural Westphalia, married June Schafer of Pan:lma, children: Jason, Melissa and Megan; Linda of Hawarden, Iowa, married Randy Terpsta, children: Travis and Lindsey; Tim who lives on the home farm southwest of Westphalia, married Jan Rubel, child: Anna; Mary of Omaha; Paul, who was stillborn. Jake and Agnes retired in 1993 live in Harlan. --- Jacob and Agnes Hastert Celebrate their 50th anniversary. The Harlan, IA Tribune 02/17/2004 HARLAN ~~ Jacob and Agnes Hastert of Harlan will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, February 29. A Mass in their honor will begin at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Harlan followed by an open house from noon ~ 2 p.m. at St. Michael's Rosman Parish Center. Friends and relatives are invited to attend. Their children and spouses are Bob and Tammy Hastert, Westphalia; Rich and Deb Hastert, Harlan; Bill and June Hastert, Westphalia; Linda and Randy Terpstra, Hawarden; Tim and Jan Hastert, Westphalia; and Mary and Stuart Oden, Wahoo, NE. The Hasterts have 13 grandchildren. Jacob is a retired farmer. Agnes is a homemaker. Jacob Hastert and Agnes Freund were married on February 27, 1954 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Panama.
