Mr. Deffland's death Monday afternoon came as a shock to his family and friends. He had been in fair health and had been seen on Brewster streets earlier in the day. Mr. Deffland's death Monday afternoon came as a shock to his family and friends. He had been in fair health and had been seen on Brewster streets earlier in the day. Pulsipher and Gertrude of Brewster, Mrs. Benton Six of Bridgeport, Molly of Seattle and Alice of Omak. Pioneer Rancher Mr. and Mrs. Deffland were early settler in Okanogan county. For several years, Mr. Deffland operated a ferry on the Okanogan river between Monse and Wakefield. His ranch there was set to fruit trees and had been a producing orchard for many years. It is now owned by the two sons. In later years, Mr. Deffland operated the Brewster Department store in the building now occupied by the Cariboo Club. Then the store was moved to the new brick building on Bruce Avenue. After the sale of the store building to H. L. Washburn, Mr. and Mrs. Deffland made their home on their orchard property west of town. In the early days the Deffland ranch on the Okanogan was widely known for its hospitality to travelers.
