Jacob Sutphen was named in his father's will dated on 4 September 1702 called eldest son, to inherit the farm on which his father lived. Will dated 4 September 1702 proved 29 Oct 1707. Dirck Van Sutphen, of the town of New Utrecht in Kings County, being at the present in good health. I leave to my eldest son Jacob, £10 when of age. I leave to my dear wife Elizabeth all the rest of my estate during her life. But if she marries, then she shall convey all the estate to the guardians of my children. After the death of my wife all the estate is to be divided among my children, Jacob, Jan, Dirck, Greentie, Abraham, Isaac, Elizabeth, Elsie, wife of Harmon Gerrittse, and Hendricke, wife of Peter ___. My will is that my eldest son Jacob shall have the farm on which I now live, he paying to the rest the sum it shall be appraised at. I appoint my friends Cornelius Van Brunt, Jaques Cortelyou, Joost Van Brunt and Peter Cortelyou, guardians of all my children. On 6 Dec 1718 he purchased 333 acres of land in "Wencougak," in Freehold Twp., Monmouth Co., New Jersey, and moved there before 1721 when he and his wife were listed as members of the Reformed Dutch Church of Freehold-Middletown. The last record of Jacob is dated 29 Dec 1749, a deed in which he sold 14 acres of his farm (Trenton Deeds, F:495). The list of his children is taken primarily from The Sutphen Family.
