Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church in Benkelman Tuesday afternoon being conducted by the regular pastor, Rev. Adolph Lillich. Singers were Mrs. Mason, Mrs. Harry Ough, Lloyd Boswell and John Baer with Mrs. Lillich at the piano and interment was in the Benkelman cemetery. Mr. Rossmiller was an outstanding man in many respects in the community which had been his home for so many years. Not alone was he outstanding as a farmer but he was possessed of extremely rare business judgment which was not alone, applied to his own personal business affairs but in the affairs of the community as well. In a public way he served as a commissioner from the Second district for two terms and as a member of the Benkelman school board for several years and his progressive tendencies were reflected in the fact that it was during his service in each of these positions that the present court house and one of the school buildings were built. He was likewise identified with this community from the financial side and was heavily interested in banking here for a long time, at one time serving as president of the Citizens State Bank. But the farm was the scene of his greatest interest and the point where he enjoyed life the most in planning and executing, sowing and reaping. He was successful in most of his personal undertakings and was one of the most extensive land owners in the county. He was a man of few words but whatever he said, one could depend upon because he made his word his obligation and an obligation and promise was next to sacred with him. In his personal life he attended strictly to his own business and almost reverently respected the rights of others. He was industrious and forward looking and had little time to complain. He liked his fellow man and treated everybody in a manner that bespoke that admiration. Although he was of the old school of thought which made him a believer in the theory that every person should stand on his own feet, meet his personal obligations, contribute his time and money to the development and betterment of his community, and labored always and diligently with that view in mind, nevertheless he was tolerant of the shortcomings of others and their seeming inability to attain the goal he believed tended to the betterment, advancement and ultimate well being of this county, state and nation. Men like Jake Rossmiller were the ones who lead in the development of Dundy county and they leave a memory to the ones who follow that suggests industry, thrift, tolerance and good citizenship that is worthy of emulation on the part of those of us who are left behind. Jacob E. Rossmiller, son of Eilert A. Rossmiller and Gertie nee Remmers, was born April 7, 1862 at Petersburg, Mernard county, Illinois. In early infancy he became a child of God thru the washing of regeneration in Holy baptism. In 1865 his parents moved to Rock Port, Atchison county, Missouri. It was at this place in accordance with the rule of the Lutheran Church that he was instructed in faith and life, which instruction was in strict accordance to the Eternal Word of God, and at the age of 16 he was made a communicant member of the Lutheran Church by confirmation. In the fall of 1884, the deceased came to Nebraska to take up a homestead. After remaining six months, he returned to his home in Missouri. On March 31, 1889, he was joined in holy wedlock to Miss Lizzie Johnson of Craig, Missouri. In the spring of 1893 he moved to Franklin county, Nebr, remaining there eight years. From there he moved to Earlsboro, Oklahoma, where he resided five years. It was in 1906 that he moved with his family to the farm north of Benkelman, Nebraska, which was his home until the time of his death. The deceased was a kind and loving father, one who knew how to manage well his own household. He also took a delightful interest in church and civic affairs. He was County Commissioner for two terms, and it was during his term of office that the beautiful new county court house was built. He likewise took an interest in the Lutheran Church, of which he was a communicant member, and showed his faith by his deeds of kindness and love. He made liberal donations toward the beautiful new Zion Lutheran Church, which was dedicated in 1931. It was in loving memory of his son, Jerry, who preceded him in death in December of 1932 that he donated the beautiful piano to the Church in December 1934. The deceased enjoyed good health up until several years ago, and at that time, because of his courage and faith, did not complain. It was about a year ago that his health became decidedly poorer. In October of last year he submitted to a series of operations in a hospital in Omaha, which relieved his trouble for a time. About a month ago his health became poorer, and from then on he lost strength. During his severe illness he showed the utmost courage. However, toward the last, when he realized that medical care could not prolong his earthly stay much longer, he was prepared for death as a Christian believer. As he was about to pass through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, he feared no evil; for he had faith that his Lord and Savior was with him, and would lead him to his heavenly home, saved by grace through faith in Christ Jesus. His faith was further evidenced by his reliance upon the Word of God, with which he was very familiar, quoting many scriptural passages from both the English and the German using these as his comfort in his hour of trial. Many of the old German church hymns, which he learned in his lifetime, were likewise a source of spiritual strength to him in his dying moments. A few weeks ago he with his family partook of the Lord's Supper in his sick chamber, as a seal for the forgiveness of sins and the strengthening of faith. He was called home to his Heavenly Father, at about 7:15 Sunday morning, June 11, 1939, at the age of 77 years, 2 months and 4 days. His friends are numbered by his acquaintances. He leaves to mourn his loss, besides his loving and devoted wife, three children, Mrs. Roy Lingo, Mrs.. E.L. Schrader, and Mrs. Forrest Stamm of Benkelman; two brothers, Albert Rossmiller of Palisade and Harmon Rossmiller of Hastings, Nebraska; and one sister, Mrs. Mary Rosenbohm of Langdon, Missouri; four grandchildren, Alvin Schrader, Evelyn, Jerry and Mary Joan Rossmiller, and a host of friends. Anderson, Hildreth; Dora Johnson and three sons, Arthur, Frank and Leon, Oxford; Mrs. Viola Johnson, Lexington; Mr. and Mrs. Rosy Luhrs and Arthur from Imperial. Homesteaded in Nebraska in 1884. Around 1906 Jacob owned 480 acres in NE and 320 acres in OK. Rossmillers had cousins in IL named BOLSTER.
