Description	:	Jacob Frederic Nefzger, the youngest son of Anna Maria Magdalena (Scherb) and Jacob Nefzger of Germany, was born in 1839 in Chatfield Township in Crawford County, Ohio. Read More	Jacob Frederic Nefzger, the youngest son of Anna Maria Magdalena (Scherb) and Jacob Nefzger of Germany, was born in 1839 in Chatfield Township in Crawford County, Ohio. He moved with his family about 1855 from Crawford County to West Union Township in Fayette County, Iowa, where they lived and farmed a few miles northeast of the county seat of West Union. Jacob worked on the farm with his father until his marriage to Anne Elizabeth Burling on 22 January 1861 in West Union Township. She was born in England on 10 August 1844, the daughter of William Burling and Elizabeth Southrill. Jacob enlisted in the War of the Rebellion on 14 August 1862. He mustered into Co A of the 38th Iowa Infantry as a 5th Corporal on 6 September 1862 but, at his own request, he was reduced in ranks on 21 December 1862. Having lost more men to disease then any other regiment, without ever fighting a major battle, the 38th came to be known as Iowa's Martyr Regiment. On 1 January 1865, the 38th was consolidated with the 34th Infantry and officially designated as the "34th Regiment of Iowa Infantry Volunteers." Jacob transferred to Co F, 34th Regiment. Jacob survived the war and mustered out with the regiment on 15 August 1865 in Houston, Texas. Jacob and Anne had two children born in West Union Township--daughter Clara Mabel on 08 November 1861 and son Frederick Elroy on 10 September 1866. On 31 August 1870, Jacob was crushed by a falling timber while working at the mill being built on the Turkey River in Fayette County. He was buried in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery not far from his home. Jacob's wife Anne, who remarried to Chauncey Lewis Brooks in 1875, was widowed for a second time in 1901 when he died in or near the town of Arlington in Fayette County. They had at least five children: Jennie Irene, Nina Imogene, Carrie, Joel Benjamin and Chauncey Lewis Brooks Jr. On 28 January 1909, Ann E. Brooks applied in Iowa for a widow's pension for Jacob's Civil War service. Anne died in October 1918 in Missouri and she is buried at the Mound Grove Cemetery in Independence, Missouri.
