He lost his first wife about the time he came to America in 1852. On that voyage he lost three children who died of cholera and were buried at sea. He was born in Holstein, Germany, April 2nd, 1825. Coming to America in 1852 he first settled at Lyons, Iowa. A year later he removed to Dixon, Illinois, where he resided until he came to Jones County in 1857, and here he resided to the time of his death.In 1854 he was married to Anna Eliza Eilers, who bore him 14 children, 13 of whom survive. These include nine sons and four daughters. Four of the sons are married and respected citizens of this country. All were present at the funeral. The deceased died from the effects of hernia, an injury received by falling from a three story building before he came to the United States. His acute illness did not last more than 23 hours; consequently his death came as a sudden and unexpected blow to his family. The funeral services were conducted on Monday by Rev. Mardorf. The remains were interred in the East Wayne cemetery. The deceased was a citizen of upright character, of a peaceable disposition and sociable in his intercourse with his friends who were numerous. In this connection we are requested to express the thanks of the widow and her family for the attention shown them by their neighbors in their bereavement.
