Mr. Gehlsen died Monday, July 12, 2010 at the Niobrara Valley Hospital in Lynch. Jacob Gehlsen was born on June 30, 1915, to Claus and Anna (Behrens) Gehlsen on their homestead northeast of Gross. He was the 6th of 9 children. Jake attended a nearby Grade School. As a teenager, Jake went to South Dakota and broke horses. In 1935, Jake went to Weiser, Idaho, where he worked on a turkey ranch, picked potatoes, and topped sugar beets. In 1938, Jake moved to Salem, Oregon, and worked as a farm hand and gardener. On August 4, 1941, Jake entered the US Marine Corps, went through training in San Diego, and was shipped to Pearl Harbor, where he was stationed until the bombing on December 7, 1941. Jake was proud to wear his Pearl Harbor's survivor's cap. Jake remained in Johnson, Midway and the Hawaiian Islands until 1943, when he was shipped to Camp Pendleton, California, to proof-fire rockets for accuracy with Cal-Tech. Some of his various duties were auto equipment operator, rocket crewman, barrage rockets and rocket battalion, and ammunition technician. In August of 1945, Jake was transferred to Quantico, Virginia, for further training with the rocket program. On September 19, 1945, the War ended and Jake returned to the Gross area to farm after serving 4 years and 2 months in the US Marine Corps. Jake received various medals and ribbons. Among those were the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Honorable Service Lapel Button, Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, Honorable Discharge Button, National Defense Medal, Battle Stars, World War II Victory Medal, USS Arizona Memorial Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Medal, and the 2001 Edition Commemorative Pin. On November 10, 1991, Jake was honored as a Nebraska survivor of Pearl Harbor attack of December 7, 1941, and received a US Mint commemorative bronze medal in Kearney, Nebraska. Jake met Emma Tejral while attending dances and on February 17, 1947, they were married at the Spencer parsonage by Fr. Condon. They lived near Gross until 1974 when they moved to Lynch to retire. As a member of the Masonic Lodge, Jake received his Jordan Medal, and his 50, 60, and in June was presented his 70 yr membership pin. He was also a member of the American Legion and VFW. In 2000, Jake received an honorary high school diploma from Lynch High School through a program allowing veterans to receive them if they were unable to obtain their education while serving their country. Survivors include his wife, their four children and spouses, four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one sister and her husband. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Carl, Frank, Hans, and four sisters, Margaret Simmons, Theresa Sell, Mary Nelson, and Anna Wenke. Jake has always said he went from the "team and buggy days to cars, airplanes, and rockets that go to the moon!"
