Description	:	Jacob Sr (Groeder) Greder was born April 7, 1837 in the small German village of Mietesheim in the northern part of Bas-Rhin (Upper Rhine), which is in the northern Department of the region of Alsace. Mietesheim is located about 35 miles north-northeast of Strasbourg in the foothills of the Vosges mountains. Alsace was part of Germany from 1871 to 1918 and from 1940 to 1944 but was succeeded to France following both WW I and WW II. Jacob Sr's mother was Catherine Groeder (1816-1871) who was also born in Mietesheim, Alsace, Germany on February 15, 1816.... Jacob Sr's mother was Catherine Groeder (1816-1871) who was also born in Mietesheim, Alsace, Germany on February 15, 1816. According to Linda Greder Gasau (3rd Cousin; Daughter of Vernon, Granddaughter of John Fred and Great-granddaughter of Peter Sr Greder), Catherine was not married when Jacob Sr was born, and so Catherine's maiden name became Jacob Sr's surname. On November 14, 1839, Catherine Groeder married Jacques Jedele (It is not known if Jacques Jedele was related to the Jedele family that later emigrated to America), and to this union, 3 other children were born (Margaret, George and Katherine). Thus, the identity of Jacob Sr Greder's biological father is not known. In 1865, Jacob Sr Greder married Katherine Klein (1844-1921) in Mietesheim, Alsace, Germany. Katherine's parents were Johannes Jean Klein (1804-1858) and Margarethe Bernhard (1814-1865), who were both born and died in Mietesheim, Alsace, Germany. In 1887, Jacob Sr and Katherine Greder and their family emigrated to America from Mietesheim, Alsace, Germany. A story from Pat Mitchell (3rd Cousin; Granddaughter of Benjamin and Helena Greder Mitchell and Great-granddaughter of Peter Sr and Salome Deiber Greder) as conveyed to her by her father Robert Mitchell, provides insight into what may have finally prompted Jacob Sr and Katherine to emigrate to America. One day Jacques (Jacob Sr Greder) and Katherine were out riding their horses and came upon a military officer who did not like the way he was riding his horse. So, the military officer drew out his black-snake whip and cut off one of Jacques' fingers. Evidently, soon thereafter, Jacques and Katharine Groeder decided to change their name and leave Germany. So, Jacques Sr Groeder Americanized his name to Jacob Sr Greder, and with his wife and 5 youngest sons and daughters emigrated to America. The Jacob Sr Greder family that emigrated to America in 1887 consisted of: o Jacob Sr Greder (50; Occupation farmer) o Katherine Klein Greder (Wife, 43) o Jacob Jr Greder (Son, 17) o Katharine Greder (Daughter, 15) o Peter Greder (Son, 11) o Michael Greder (Son, 6) o Salome Greder (Daughter, 2) The Jacob Sr Greder family sailed on the La Bretagne departing from La Havre, France and arriving at Ellis Island in New York City on 25 April 1887. Margaret (1866-1950) and George (1868-1919), the oldest daughter and son, had already emigrated from Germany to America. Margaret emigrated to America by herself in 1881 when she was 15 years old (1900 US census). She worked in Peoria Illinois until 1887, and thereafter moved to Crawford county with her folks soon after they had emigrated. George had also emigrated to America by himself, arriving at Ellis Island, New York City on March 12 1884 (1910 US census; NY passenger list). Jacob Sr and Katherine also had an 8th child, Michael, who was born in 1879. Michael died as an infant in 1880 and was buried in Germany. Mr Greder was born in Alsace, Germany in 1837. Jacob Sr Greder's (1837-1916) Obituary (Denison Bulletin, March 1, 1916) In November last year [1915] Mr Greder celebrated his Golden wedding anniversary, and soon after that began to fail rapidly in health and strength. In the early part of this month, he became bedfast, and Saturday February 26, 1916 @ 3:00 am he passed away surrounded by members of his family. The immediate cause of his death was old age, as he was 78 years old. Jacob was born in Mietesheim, Alsace Germany and came to this country about 30 years ago. He stopped in Illinois for a few months, before coming to Crawford county where he has resided continuously. He was actively engaged in farming until a very few years ago, when he moved to this place [Buck Grove]. He was very successful and owned at the time of his death 3 fine farms [Ben and Gerty Greder and Mike and Mate Greder became owners of 2 of these farms]. He leaves to remember him, his wife and 7 children (Spouses also listed): 1. Margaret (1866-1950) and Henry Didier (1865-1926) 2. George Sr (1868-1919) and Caroline Carstens (1876-1903; 1st wife) and Mary Carstens (1880-1919; 2nd wife) 3. Jacob Jr (1869-1855) and Augusta Carstens (1874-1938) 4. Katherine (1871-1958) and Jacob Deiber (1886-1899) 5. Peter Sr (1873-1953) and Salome Deiber (1877-1954) 6. Mike (1881-1945 and Mate Carstens (1885-1969) 7. Salome (1884-1958) and George Ruch (1878-1967) There were 32 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren living at the time of his death [Jacob Sr and Kate had an 8th child, Michael, who died as an infant in 1880 and is buried in Germany]. Jacob Sr Greder was a German of the old sturdy type, honesty, industrious and frugal and had many friends among all classes who will miss his kindly greetings on our streets. The funeral was held in town @ 1:00 pm Tuesday and the body laid to rest in the cemetery near the Hays place [Saint Petri Lutheran cemetery in Washington township].
