The remains of Jacob Reed, a former resident of this vicinity were brought here for burial in Maple Hill cemetery last Thursday afternoon. Mr. Reed, who would have been 84 years of age next May died Sunday evening Feb. 4, at a hospital in Montezuma. The funeral was held on Wednesday from a Grinnell funeral home. Mr. Reed had been a sexton of the cemetery at the church in Chester Center for many years. From the Montezuma Republican, Jan. 8, 1945, p. 1: Jake Reed Died Sunday. Jake Reed, one of Chester Township's well known and popular residents, passed away Sunday evening at the Montezuma Hospital. He was a former sexton of the Chester Church, and was 83 years old. Funeral services were held this (Wednesday) afternoon from the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell at 2:30. His nickname, and the name most knew him by, was Jake.
