Read More	JACOB HERR, CIVIL WAR VETERAN, DIED SUDDENLY TUESDAY Death Last Night Result of Heart Attack, Came Without Warning At Home Here Jacob Herr, 84 years of age, and a veteran of the Civil War, died suddenly at his home here at 822 East Waldon street at 9 p.m. yesterday. After being about during the day and retiring apparently in as good health as usual Mr. Herr was stricken with a heart attack and death came almost entirely without warning. It was a shock and sorrow to a wide circle of friends and realtives. Mr. Herr has lived for many years in this county and was well known especially north of Centerville and in the Plano vicinity. During the Civil War he had served with Co. H Seventh Iowa Infantry and had the distinction of being a member of Sherman's famed "march to the sea". The veteran was born in Erie county, New York, March 20, 1846. When he was 12 years of age he came with his parents to Washington county, Iowa, where the family located and where he lived until he reached young manhood and united in marriage with Margaret Lavinia McQuiston, in 1874. Mr. Herr and his wife moved to Kansas, where they stayed a few years returning to Iowa and settling in Hardin county, because of Mrs. Herr's ill health. A short time later they purchased the Herr homestead north of Plano, on which a son, Vern,e, now lives. Since that time with the exception of one year spent here, Mr. and Mrs. Herr resided in Plano and vicinity. Mr. Herr was preceded in death by his wife eight years ago, and is also preceded in death by six children. Six surviving children are: Verne, Benjamin, and John of Plano Vicinity, Fred at Mystic, William of Griffinsville, and Grant of Buffalo, New York. There are 23 surviving grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, beside a sister, Mrs. John Schner of Anaheim, Calif., and a brother, Fred Herr of Wellman, Iowa. On last Thanksgiving day Mr. Herr united in marriage with Mrs. Clara Barnthouse, who survives his death. Mr. Herr was a man of good character and a member of the German Lutheran faith. His death will be a sorrow to all who knew him, and it comes as another of several sorrows borne by the Herr family in the past several months. Grant, of Buffalo, is coming to attend the funeral and arrangements pend his arrival. It is planned to have the G.A.R. in charge of the service. **** OBITUARY Jacob Herr, son of John and Margaret Herr, was born at Tonawanda, Erie county, New York, March 20, 1846. At the age of ten years, he with his parents, moved to Washington county, Iowa, near the town of Richmond, where the family located. He lived there until he grew to manhood. During the Civil War he enlisted with Co. H., 7th Iowa Infantry, serving 18 months, being with General Sherman's command on their famous march to the sea. In February, 1874, he was united in marriage to Margaret Lavina McQuiston. To this union was born 12 children, 8 boys and 4 girls, 6 sons surviving, John, at Plano, W. A., at Griffinsville, J. G., at Buffalo, N.Y., Fred at Mystic, Ben and Vern at Plano. He was preceded in death by his wife 8 years ago and is also preceded in death by 6 children. There are 25 surviving grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. John Shachner, Annaheim (sic), Calif., and 4 brothers, Philip and Henry of California, Mike of Kansas, Fred of Wellman, Ia. On Thanksgiving day, 1929, he was united in marriage to Clara Barnthouse, who survives him. He was a member of the German Lutheran faith. His death will be a sorrow to all who knew him and it comes as another of several sorrows born by the Herr family in the past several months. At the time of his death he was 84 years, 6 months and 3 days of age. Funeral services were held at the Chariton River church, conducted by Rev. G. W. Swan, of West Grove, Ia., an old time friend of the family, who read the 14th chapter, 123rd verse of John, and who payed highest tribute to the departed member of the Civil War, saying that highest respect should be paid to the surviving members of the fast-thinning ranks, there being only three members able to attend the funeral of their comrade. Burial was in the cemetery near by attended by members of the G.A.R., American Legion, W.R.C., and Co. G., who fired a salute at the grave. As Uncle Jake he was known by all his friends who were numbered by all who knew him, and his passing will be felt with deep regret not only at his home in Centerville, but at his old homes at Brushy and Plano vicinities.
