ENGEL Ashley, N.D. --- Jacob J. Engel, 85, of Ashley and formerly of Bismarck, N.D., died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at the Ashley Nursing Home. His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. today in the Ashley Baptist Church. The Rev. Darwin Stahl will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. today in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Bismarck with military graveside rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1326 of Bismarck. Carlsen Funeral Home in Ashley is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service today at the church. Jacob J. Engel was born April 9, 1916, to Jacob and Rosina (Delzer) Engel in Venturia, N.D. He grew up and attended school in Venturia. He entered the U.S. Army on May 28, 1941. He served in central Europe, participating in the campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes. He was honorably discharged Oct. 1, 1945. He then returned to Venturia. He married Ella Buchholz on April 19, 1946, in Venturia. He worked for a short time at Glaesmann's Garage in Ashley. They then made their home on a farm east of Ashley, where they farmed until 1954. They then moved to Bismarck, where he worked for 20 years for the city of Bismarck. He then worked for eight years for KBMR Radio in maintenance. She died Oct. 14, 1989. In 1995, he moved to Ashley. He married Mary Werlinger-Pfeifer on Aug. 19, 1996, in Hague, N.D. They made their home in Hague for one and one-half years before moving to Ashley. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1326 of Bismarck and was a life member of the Bismarck Eagles. Survivors include his wife of Ashley; one daughter, Joan (Ross) Carman of Bismarck; one son, Eugene "Gene" Engel of Hill City; three stepsons, Dennis (Yvonne) Pfeifer of Minneapolis, and Harry (Joyce) Pfeifer and David Pfeifer, both of Hague; one brother, Julius Engel of Bismarck; one sister, Emma Stroh of Woodland, Calif.; six stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, one daughter, one brother and two sisters. Casketbearers will be Jeff Engel and Steven Engel, both of Bismarck, Orlando Syverson and Clarence Drager, both of Wyndmere, N.D., Ryan Pfeifer of Zeeland, N.D., and Justin Pfeifer of Strasburg, N.D.
