Description	:	Jacob "Jake" Fagerland, 98, a resident of rural Noonan since 1916, died Friday, May 14, 1993, at St. Luke's Hospital, Crosby. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Noonan, with Rev. Carol A. Wendel officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Jake was born March 26, 1895, at Wegdahl, Minn., to Jacob and Guri Fagerland. Jake attended rural school and farmed for his dad from 1910 until his father's death in 1913. Jake was born March 26, 1895, at Wegdahl, Minn., to Jacob and Guri Fagerland. Jake attended rural school and farmed for his dad from 1910 until his father's death in 1913. He then worked for a time with his brother, Lars, at Sisseton, S.D., before returning to the family farm in Minnesota where he lived until 1916. In 1916 he rode an emigrant rail car to Kermit with four horses, two cows, and $75.00. He lived with his brother, Ben, until 1920 and in the meantime had purchased a quarter section of land in Upland Township. In 1920 he purchased a quarter section of land in Blooming Valley Township where he has farmed and lived since. Jake married Gertie (Viola) Kjos Feb. 19, 1925, at Noonan. She died April 13, 1985, shortly after celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. Trees were something of a passion with Jake, and he figures he planted over 4,000 on his farm. He was the oldest active member of Divide County Senior Citizens and spent as much time as possible playing cards there. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Survivors include sons, Virgil of Noonan, Dale of Crosby, sons and daughters-in-law, Jason and Florence of Crosby, Verden and Rachel of Noonan, and Darrel and Burnetta of Williston; daughters and sons-in-law, Norma and Milton Nygaard of Wildrose, Lois and Roger Lund of Crosby, and Donna and Glen Froseth of Kenmare; 23 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was also preceded in death by an infant son, Junior Carlton, his parents, five brothers, four sisters, two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
