He was the third child. MARIANE MAGDALENE CHRISTENSEN was born 20 December 1872 to Jens Peder Christensen and Inge Marie Nielsen at Harring. She was christened at Harring church on 5 Jan 1873. She was the first child. When she was quite young her parents moved to Skyum, a short distance from Stagstrup and Harring. Little is known about Jacob and Mariane's childhood or how they met. Emigration records show that when they applied for tickets to the USA Jacob was a laborer at Skjoldborg (a short distance south of Thisted, Thy) and Mariane was a housekeeper in Thisted. Their tickets were for the S.S. Iceland, sailing from Copenhagen on 31 March 1891. Mariane was 18 and although Jacob would not be 18 until May of that year, his age is listed as 18 on the emigration record. Jacob's ticket was number 639 and Mariane's was number 786, leaving us to wonder if Jacob was going and persuaded Mariane to go also. It is not certain why Jacob and Mariane chose to go to Goodwin, but it may have had something to do with the fact that Jacob's step-grandmother had emigrated to there with her young husband, a man named Larsen. All we have for information is that upon arrival at Goodwin Mariane lived with Mrs. Hebal until she and Jacob were married on 25 April 1892 at Chicago. There is a small wedding photo of a young couple taken in Chicago (not Mariane and Jacob), so perhaps they went there to be with others who had emigrated from Denmark. The beautiful photograph of Jacob and Mariane that hung in their home and was assumed to be their wedding photo was taken at the Egan studio in Watertown, South Dakota After they were married they settled on the old Bartelson farm, just east of the farm they would later buy. Later they lived on what was called the Rohweder (or Bazel) farm and in 1896 homesteaded in Portland Township, Deuel County. As the children grew to school age they moved to the Landin farm where they lived six years. In 1909 they bought the adjoining land on the east from Henry and Lettie Hendrickson for the sum of $2200 and and assuming a $1 500 mortgage. The farm was 158 acres. It was on that farm the children grew to adulthood and it was to that farm they returned for family visits, bringing their children to visit "Grandma and Grandpa Jake". Mariane and Jacob retired from farming in 1942 and moved into a small house in Goodwin. Mariane died there on 1 2 April 1949. Jacob went to Pipestone, Minnesota to live with his daughter Hilda, and then his son John. Jacob died in Pipestone 12 Feb 1951. They are buried in the Goodwin, South Dakota Cemetery.
