Tragedy Struck the Etienne Family In 1872 22-year-old Jacob Etienne sailed from Germany to New York, hoping to start a family and have a good life in America. Tragedy Struck the Etienne Family In 1872 22-year-old Jacob Etienne sailed from Germany to New York, hoping to start a family and have a good life in America. "Jake" made his way from New York to Iowa where he planned to become a farmer. In 1873 he met and married 22-year-old Mary A. McTigue. Jake and Mary's first child, John, was born in 1874. The 1880 census shows that life was going well for this family. Jake was a farmer; Mary did the housekeeping; they hired a farm laborer; and they now had two children. In October 1892 their eighth child was born. Unfortunately, Jake and Mary's lives did not have a happy ending. We don't know the year that a tragic accident happened at the farm. As Mary was doing her chores, a cow stepped on her foot and broke all the bones. Mary looked for a doctor who could treat her crushed foot to ease the pain and allow her to walk. The doctors had no idea how to help her, so Mary continued to walk in spite of the pain. Her wound turned cancerous and Mary developed bone cancer which caused her death March 8, 1894. Jake did his best to take care of his eight children and to make his farm profitable. He missed Mary terribly. On December 31, 1897 he died of pneumonia. Fortunately for the children, their mother had many relatives who loved her family and offered to do what they could to help the orphaned children. In addition, there is no doubt that the two other McTigue families shown on the 1900 census as living on farms next to Michael McTigue's farm (where some of these children lived) would have helped to raise these children. Mona (Etienne) Smith is the daughter of Robert Francis Etienne, one of the orphans. She tells me, "The children tried for a year to run the farm but it proved too much for them. Little Joseph died, possibly of pneumonia. The family went to Uncle Mike's farm. John Etienne, the eldest, left to try to make life on his own. When my father was 13 he was given $13 to leave the farm and make it on his own. That left brother Louis at the farm alone. He left about two years later. Life was not easy." How the Etienne Orphans Fared as Children John William Etienne -- born 20 Nov 1874 in Nemaha, Iowa John was 19 when his mother died and 23 when his father died. Elnora "Nora" Etienne -- born 25 Oct 1878 in Newell, Buena Vista, Iowa Nora was 15 when her mother died and 19 when her father died. At the time of the 1900 census she was living with two uncles, Michael McTigue and Robert P. McTigue, on Michael's farm in Nemaha village, Sac Co, Iowa. Mary Mercedes Etienne -- born Feb 1880 in Sac Co, Iowa Mary was 14 when her mother died and 17 when her father died. The 1900 census shows that in 1900 Mary was a Servant, working for and living with a couple with five children in Newell village, Buena Vista Co., Iowa. Margaret Etienne -- born Apr 1883 in Sac Co, Iowa Margaret was 10 when her mother died and 14 when her father died. The 1900 census shows that Margaret was a Servant in the home of Edward M. J. and Annie (McTigue) Miles. Annie Miles was the daughter of Patrick McTigue (b.1825) and his second wife, Eleanor (Hathaway) McTigue. They lived in Hayes & Maple Valley Townships, Buena Vista, Iowa. Joseph Patrick Etienne -- born 1885 in Sac Co, Iowa Joseph was 9 years old when his mother died and he died in 1896, before the death of his father. Nellie Frances Etienne -- born Jan 1887 in Sac Co, Iowa Nellie was 7 when her mother died and 10 when her father died. The 1900 census shows that Nellie was living with two uncles, Michael McTigue and Robert P. McTigue, on Michael's farm in Nemaha village, Sac Co, Iowa. Robert Francis Etienne -- born in 20 Apr 1890 in Newell, Iowa Robert was 3 when his mother died and 7 when his father died. The 1900 census shows that Robert was living with two uncles, Michael McTigue and Robert P. McTigue, on Michael's farm in Nemaha village, Sac Co, Iowa. Louis Edward Etienne -- born 7 Oct 1892 in Newell, Iowa Louis was 1 when his mother died and 5 when his father died.
