Description	:	Jacob, his wife Maria, and children left Germany in August of 1875 and sailed on the ship, Maine, bound for the United States. The family settled near Rheinland, Missouri. He was a blacksmith by trade. Jacob and Mary had several children including Jacob Jr., Oscar,Walter, August, Fredrich, Anna, Paul, and Maria. They came to Nebraska in 1898 settling near Garland where the couple remained the rest of their lives. (obit follows:) Jacob Koch was born at Losinendorf, Kreis Kleve, Germany on Nov. 4, 1849. He was the third oldest of a family of ten children. He was the last living of his family, all others having preceded him in death. On March 10, 1874 he was married to Marie Josephine Bast. He came to America with his wife and son in 1875 and settled in Rhineland, Missouri. In 1897 he moved from there to a farm near Garland and in 1910he retired and lived in Garland the rest of his earthly days. Elven children were born to them. Two of them died in infancy and his oldest son in 1926. His wife preceded him in death 17 years ago. The deceased had been one of the early settlers who came from Germany. Sturdy he faced the hardships of pioneer life and saw the middle west grow to prominence and prosperity through their faithful and persistent labor. The ideals and virtues in which he was instructed in his home and in his church he upheld to the very last days of his life. On that account he was respected for his convictions and loved for his friendliness. In his life he set a good example for his children, to whom he was a good father. He was a faithful member of the Evangelical church. He prepared himself for his departure from this life seriously. As his physical strength decreased the inner man grew. Peacefully he answered the summons of his Master at 12:30 a.m. Friday, May 28. He leaves to mourn eight children: Mrs. Anna Schultz, Haxtum, Colo.; Mrs. Marie Grots, Garland; Walter Koch, Seward; August Koch, Tamora; Ford Koch, Julesburg, Colo.; Ernest Koch, Seward; Paul Koch, Garland; 21 grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
