The cause of death was cancer, and he is the third member of the family to be taken within recent months, resulting in poignant sorrow to the survivors. Mr. Luinstra was born in Grypskerk, Holland, March 4, 1869. He was educated in the schools of his native country and when 23 years old joined the Royal Dutch army, being a member of the Second Regiment of field artillery. Later, when he had accumulated enough money to come to the United States, he did so, arriving in 1896. Settling in Chicago he worked at various jobs and crafts there for several years. There he met Miss Anna Huisenga and they were married in 1902. In 1906 they came to Montana, bringing their two young children, John and Gertrude. Their first home was on Burton bench. Four years later he took up a homestead, which he later called the Riverside Ranch, and which is one of the most modern and progressive in this area. It is located east of Choteau about half a mile beyond the Teton river bridge. Mr. Luinstra and his sons are co-partners in the operation of this excellent farm. Nine children were born to the union, seven of them being native to Teton county. The eldest son, John, was called about a year ago, and his sister, Gertrude (Mrs. John Van Setten) died last spring. The seven who survive are: Mrs. Neil Van Wichen, Corporal Pete Luinstra of the U.S. army air corps, Sam, Jacob, Jr., Harry of the U.S. navy, Miss Ann Luinstra of Helena, and Miss Alice Luinstra of Choteau. Mr. Luinstra began his farming career with meager funds and limited acres. After long years of hard work, combined with frugality and careful planning, he built up and acquired the large wheat ranch, with a spacious home, numerous buildings, well equipped shops, and extensive machinery. Gardening and other sidelines also received his attention. Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Methodist church. The remains were laid to rest in the Choteau cemetery beside those of his son, John.
