Read More	Obituary from the Manchester Democrat - Manchester, Iowa, December 2, 1914 (thank you, Barb W.): Jacob Mangold, one of the most widely known farmers, and by many said to be the wealthiest land owner of Delaware county, died at his home in Hazel green township, on Sunday evening, November 29, 1914, following an illness of several months. Although in rather feeble health for months, his family and friends little realized that the summons would come as suddenly as it did. Funeral services were held this forenoon at 11 o'clock at the family residence, Rev. Mr. Melchert, pastor of the German Lutheran church of Ryan, conduction the services. Interment was made in Pleasant Hill cemetery near Ryan. Jacob Mangold was born in Basil, Switzerland, November 11, 1832, and was the son of Jacob and Anna Mangold, both natives of Switzerland. Mr. Mangold was reared on his father's farm and remained in his native land until twenty-one years of age, when he left that country to cast his lot with the settlers of the Republic of the Western continent. Landing here, he first sought St. Louis, Missouri, as his home, but soon left that place and for a year spent his time in the vicinity of Central City and Highland, Illinois. In the spring of 1854 he came to Iowa and settled on the farm in Hazel Green township, Delaware county. He bought his original homestead from the United States government at one dollar per acre. On this farm Mr. Mangold has resided continuously until his death Sunday night. Trained in early life to habits of industry and the careful attention to the cultivation of every available spot of ground in a mountainous country, it was to him a comparatively easy task, in his imagination , to break up the virgin soil to the raw prairies of Iowa, stretched out before him in almost level plains. Nevertheless he found it to be not so difficult as that he had experienced in conquering the meager soil of the rocky land from which he came, and in a few years after coming to Iowa he had reached, through his own exertions, a state of prosperity that he never could have accomplished in his native land, in the same length of time. Mr. Mangold homesteaded several hundred acres of land in the southern part of the county, and during his life time made extensive investments in land. At the time of his death it is believed that he was perhaps the wealthiest land holder of the county. Besides his extensive land holdings in the county, he owned large tracts in neighboring states. Mr. Mangold was united in marriage, in 1866, with Miss Francisca Marshall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Marshall of this county. Mrs. Mangold passed away at the home about a year ago. To Mr. and Mrs. Mangold were born ten children; Louisa, who died at the tender age of eight months; Mrs. Gus Steinkopf of Ryan; John Mangold of Ryan; Carl Mangold of Golden; Edward Mangold of Ryan; Mrs. A. E. File of Manchester; Mrs. John A. McIntosh of Manchester; Henry and Arthur Mangold of Ryan, and William Mangold of Coggon. Mr. Mangold was one of the most successful farmers and stock raisers in the county, accumulating his vast possessions by hard work and fair dealings with his fellow man. His death is a source of genuine sorrow to many who had learned to know Mr. Mangold intimately during the sixty years of his residence in the county. The children have the sincere sympathy in the death of a kind father.
