Jacobson was born in Hegelan, Lyndal, Norway, May 19, 1857 to Ole and Ganel Jacobson. There were six children in the family: Severine, Gabriel, John, Celia, and one in Norway. When a lad of nine he went to live with his grandparents. At the age of 14 he started as a sailor and spent most of his early life on the high seas. Jacob was a very good swimmer. In 1881, when 24 years old he left Norway for America. He traveled to Iowa where he worked on a farm for two years. In 1891 he left Iowa for Sims, North Dakota. There he worked on the railroad and in the coal mines. Jacob bought a farm 1 mile east of Sims. He continued working at the mines walking from his farm home to and from his place of employment. Bertina Feland was born in Traland, Norway, November 17, 1866 to Ole and Aaselina Feland. She lived in a farm in Norway before coming to America sometime before 1886. There were eight children in the family: Theodore, Otto, Oscar, Rudolph, Dina, Olivia, Jacobina, and Bertina. Bertina's grandmother, Talegolina, was a Dutch girl who had been kidnapped by Per Traland, (Bertina's grandfather) as he sailed the seas. They were married on board ship by the ship's captain. The Tralands settled in Norway. Bertina, her dad and some brothers came to America first. Aaselina stayed behind on the farm in Norway. Expecting to come to America soon she sold her farm. When word reached her that she was not to come at this time, she simply bought another farm and waited four years before she came. Jacob Jacobson and Bertina Feland were married December 7, 1886 and lived on Jacob's farm. They had nine children: Tildah, Mrs. Martin Willman; Oscar married Anna Stromberg; James, married Alice Hanson; Julia, Mrs. Clifford Leach; Delia, Mrs. Arthur Olin; Borgany, Mrs. Frank Toepke; Edward, drowned in the Heart River at 18 years of age; Anna, Mrs. Ralph Cox died when the furnace exploded; and Dagne, died when a few days old. Bertina died May 4, 1911 of pneumonia shortly after giving birth to Borgany. Jacob moved to Almont to during the latter part of his life. He passed away April 25, 1939.
