To Jake, the things that were important were his family, his faith, and his work and, if you closely examined his life, you would see that he strived to be the best he could possibly be in each one of these areas. He was a generous man who placed the wellbeing of others before his own. Almost as though he felt that he owed it to the people who counted on him to work hard and be a reliable friend, neighbor, and businessman. Jake lived his life to the fullest and gave all that he had to living it with integrity each and every day. Life in America during the early 1920's was without question very prosperous. So much so that people came from far and wide searching their fortunes and seeking the American dream. In the middle of America 's heartland, Iowa was also seeing its share of the success; farm prices had climbed higher then ever before during WWI and, even after the war had ended, farm related industries were thriving. And in the small, rural community of Cylinder, like in the rest of the state farming was the order of the day. Situated just south of the Minnesota border in northern Iowa, it is in Cylinder that Jacob Omar Ihle was born on May 11, 1923 to Owen Ihle, a farmer of Norwegian decent, and his wife Petra Lee. As his parent's oldest son and the second of four children in his family, Jacob, or Jake as most people called him, was born into a role of great responsibility. While Jake was growing up, his father was often sick, therefore many of the daily chores around the farm were placed in his hands. From this he gained invaluable hands on experience and learned how to build and fix just about anything. By the age of ten he had already rebuilt the motor on one of the farm's tractors. His time on the family farm was imparting him with an invaluable work ethic and preparing him for the rest of his life. Attending the local Lutheran Church, he was also building a foundation in Christ that would last the rest of his days. Although he had many obligations at home, he was able to complete his education in Iowa and graduate from high school. Not long after his graduation, Jake was involved in a car accident that left him hospitalized. At the time this seemed like a devastating turn of events, but it actually brought him closer to a young woman named Gertrude Dykhuis, from Fennville, Michigan. She was Jake's brother-in-law's sister, and while he was laid up in a hospital bed she came to visit him. It wasn't long before Jake was back on his feet and the two of them were dating. In December of 1944, Jake and Gertrude made it official when they took their vows as husband and wife. While on a visit to Gertrude's parent's home in Fennville, Jake went to look at a farm near the Rabbit River on 55th and 133rd Ave. in East Saugatuck. By 1946, the couple had purchased the farm and set up residence back in Gertrude's home state of Michigan. In 1946 their first son Gary was born in Iowa, followed by Everet in 1947 and Peter in 1948. While running the farm, Jake also took work in area factories to make ends meet. No matter what job he was doing, he took great pride in his work and always insisted on doing things the right way. In 1954, he took on one more responsibility when he began leasing a full service gas station in Douglas. While working on a truck there in 1959, one of the tires blew up in his face and nearly ended his career. Despite what everyone thought, a short time later Jake was back on his feet and purchasing his very own station. In 1961 Jake became the proud owner of a Shell full service gas station and garage just off of Blue Star Highway north of Saugatuck, better known today as Napa Auto Parts and Ihle Service Garage of Saugatuck. His wife Gertrude began running the diner next door in the mid-60's making the business a family enterprise. Over the years, Jake firmly secured his place as an honest and reliable businessman. Later, when his service station had been around for many years, he became the old businessman of the area. He always lived a full life, and from family to faith to work he was always committed. Although he wasn't one to discuss his faith, since he and Gertrude had moved to the area in the 1940's, they were devoted attendees of worship at Zion Lutheran Church in Holland. A small church with a congregation that barely broke thirty, they were thankful to have Jake around as he was always ready to lend a hand or his truck when they needed something hauled to and from functions. At 6'5, 350 lbs, with hands as big as car tires, Jake was a man who commanded the room but not only with his stature. He was generous, faithful, and supported his family throughout his entire life. This is a man who will be dearly missed and whose character will never be forgotten in the hearts and minds of all his family and friends. Jacob Omar Ihle, age 82, of Saugatuck, MI. died Thursday April 13, 2006 at Heart Land Heath Care of Holland, MI. He was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude Ihle in 1983, and grandson Eric Ihle in 1971. His family includes: children; Gary and Viola Ihle of Hamilton, Everet and Sue Ihle of Holland, Peter and Jackie Ihle of Glen; eight grand children; six great grand children; brother in law John Medbery of Alabama; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Services will be held at 11 am on Tuesday at Saugatuck Chapel Dykstra Life Story Funeral Homes with The Rev. John Westra officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Saugatuck. A visitation will be held from 7-9 pm Monday at Dykstra Life Story Funeral Homes Saugatuck Chapel 520 Lake street in Saugatuck, MI.
