It certainly should be a satisfaction to every man to be able to retire in his declining years and feel that he has plenty to keep him in comfort until the end comes. The farmer who owns three hundred and twenty acres of excellent farming land in Shelby county has a competency which insures him all of the comforts of modern life and there is no reason why a farmer with such an acreage should continue in active service. One of the substantial retired farmers of Defiance, Iowa, is Jacob Peter Muller, who, by correct principles and well defined methods, has accumulated a farm of three hundred and twenty acres in Union and Greeley townships, Shelby county, Iowa. Jacob Peter Muller, the son of Peter and Jennie (Gerdes) Muller, was born September 3, 1841, in Germany. His father was a canal boatman in Germany during his whole life, and carried freight from one port to another in the interior of Germany. He followed this occupation until his death in 1876. His wife had preceded him to the grave many years, her death occurring in 1855. Nine children were born to Peter Muller and wife: Jennie, John, Meind, Ryclyff, Alice, Jacob, Peter, William, Susan and one who died in infancy. Only one of this family besides Jacob Peter is living in this country, and that is his sister Susan, who is now making her home in Illinois. Jacob P. Muller was educated in the schools of his native land and after leaving school worked upon the farms in his home neighborhood until he was twenty~five years of age. He came to America in 1866, immediately after the close of the Civil War, and located at Peoria, Illinois. He worked on a farm near there until his marriage in 1870, when he rented a farm of one hundred and seventy~two acres, living on this Illinois tract for eight years. In 1878 he brought his family to Greeley township, Shelby county, Iowa, where he purchased one hundred and sixty acres from old Judge Macy. He came in just after the terrible grasshopper scourge, and consequently avoided all of the trials incident to that troublesome period. He has prospered from the start. Although he began with practically nothing, he has succeeded where many have failed and today his broad acres form a glowing tribute to his successful agricultural operations. Mr. Muller has been a large stock raiser, paying particular attention to the raising of hogs, although he also has raised some cattle for the markets. He continued in active farming until 1902, when he bought a comfortable home in Defiance, where he is now living surrounded by all the comforts and conveniences of modern life. Mr. Muller was married August 8, 1870, at Secor, Illinois, to Matilda Hulsebus, born June 14, 1847, the daughter of Albert Hulsebus, and to this union nine children have been born: Peter, Hannah, Jennie, Albert, Fanny, Mae, Eola, Karl and Alice, deceased in Illinois in 1879. Peter married Hannah Hulsebus, and has thirteen children, Gilbert, Walter, Joseph, Alice, Ruth, Joyce, Mildred, Otto, Homer, Irene, Paul, Aline and Oland, deceased. Hannah married L. E. Curl and has six children, Guy, Louis, Maude, Helen, Hazel and Pauline. Jennie is single and makes her home with her parents in Defiance. Albert married Hannah Hulsebus and has three children, Donald, Neva and Beneta. Fanny is single and living with her parents. Mae is the wife of Dwight Williams, and has three children, Ella, Harry and Mae. Eola married Samuel Keilley. Karl married Minnie Curl and has two daughters, Maude and Cleone. The grandchildren are all single and living with their parents Mrs. Muller's parents were natives of Germany, as was Mrs. Muller. Coming to this country in an early day, they located in Illinois. After remaining in that state for six years they removed to Iowa and located in Union township, Shelby county. They lived in this county the remainder of their days arid reared a family of twenty~three children, Albert Hulsebus having been married three times. Mr. Muller has been a life~long Democrat, and always has been more or less interested in local political affairs. In his younger days he served as township trustee and as school director and in both capacities rendered I his fellow citizens faithful and efficient service. The members of the family are all loyal adherents of the German Lutheran church, and are generous con~ tributors to its support. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * from "1882~1982 Defiance (Iowa) Century Review" pages 145~146 MULLER FAMILY HISTORY Jacob Muller, who lived near Warrensburg, Illinois, married Tillie Hulsebus in 1870. In 1888, Jacob Muller brought his family to Defiance because the land in Illinois was too level. They located on 320 acres of land in Greeley and Union Townships. Jacob and Tillie were parents of eight children: Peter (wife, Hannah Hulsebus); Hannah (husband, Elwood Curl); Jennie; Albert (wife, Hannah Hulsebus); Carl (wife, Minnie Curl); Fannie; May (husband, D.C. Williams); and Eola (husband, Sam Kiely). When some of the boys became old enough to farm in 1900, Jacob and Tillie moved into town. In 1917 Jacob died. In 1918, Tillie and some of the family moved to Harlan. Some of the children remained near Defiance. Jennie Muller was the proprietor of the millinery shop in Defiance. Fannie Muller was clerk at Kuhl and Loehr Store for many years. Peter Muller spent his lifetime in Shelby County. He started farming three miles north and one mile west of Defiance in 1892. Their four oldest children, Gilbert, Walter, Joseph and Alice, were born there. In 1900 they moved to a farm three miles south of Defiance. There were ten more children born. They were Ruth, Mildred, Joyce, Paul, Irene, Otto, Homer, Mayme, Olin, and Delores. The family lived here until 1919 when Peter, Hannah, and the younger children moved to Harlan. Joe Muller, who married Lillian Hulsebus, then moved to the farm. Joe was killed in an engine accident in 1923. Gilbert Muller, who was born in 1893, married Rose Nielsen and moved to this farm. Rose was born in Harlan in 1895 and taught school for several years in this vicinity before her marriage. Two sons were born to this marriage, Deane in 1919 and Dale in 1921. Gilbert and Rose bought this farm in 1937 for $65.00 an acre, and then bought 80 acres to the north in 1957. Gilbert and Rose lived on this farm until they moved into a retirement apartment in Defiance in 1971. Due to poor health, Gilbert spent his later years in the Baptist Home in Harlan until his death in 1977. Deane was married to Donna Goodner in 1946. Deane died in 1948. Dale went to country school, graduated from Defiance Public High School in 1938. Dale lived with his aunt, Etta Jensen, for six years on a farm, located in Greeley Township. Then he purchassed a farm north of Defiance. Gilbert, Deane and Dale farmed together until 1948. Dale was married to Verlee Custer in 1948. Verlee's family homesteaded a farm in the Corley area. Part of the Custer farm has been in the family over 100 years. Verlee was born in 1927, attended seven years of school in Corley, and graduated from Harlan High School in 1945. Verlee's parents were Glen Custer (1888~1975) and Opal Goodner (1892~1959). Before her marriage she worked at the Farm Bureau and Harlan Newspaper offices. Dale and Verlee lived on the Greeley Township farm until 1962. They bought a farm in the northeast corner of Westphalia Township and in 1962 built a house on this farm and moved there. Dale and Verlee have enjoyed feeding cattle and hogs, and breeding Hereford cattle. They are active members of the E.U.B. Church that is now the United Methodist Church at Defiance. The family has been active in extension, 4~H and Masonic Lodge. Verlee was the Shelby County Homemaker of the Year in 1963. Dale and Verlee have four children: Shari Lee, born in 1949, husband Ray Pleak, D.V.M., lives in Harlan. Bonnie, born in 1950, husband Robert Budolfson, lives in Bulishoals, Arkansas. Tim, born in 1951, wife Jolene Andersen. Dennis, born in 1953, wife Donna Hansen. Tim and Jo moved to Gilbert's farm in 1972 and lived there six years. Tim and Jø now live on the Greeley Township farm. Dennis and Donna moved to Gilbert's farm in 1976, where he continues to farm. From 1963 to 1969, these four young people showed Hereford cattle, raised by their father. Bonnie,Tim and Denny won grand champion steer awards at Shelby County Fairs and Shari had baby grand champion at Dunlap 4~County Fair.
