This transition actually goes back to Pennsylvania when the Stapletons, who came originally from England, settled in the German communities of Berks. Co., Penn. The Germans, who found it difficult to pronounce the letter P, pronounced and wrote the name as Stableton. From Stableton the name went to Stebleton....It is also interesting to note that the English spelling of the name Stapleton is Stapylton." --------- Obituary: Fairfield Ledger August 14, 1907 Pg. 3 Col. 2 --------- Obituary: Jefferson County Republican August 16, 1907 Pg. 5 Col. 2 & 3 Obituary Jacob STEBLETON was born Aug. 15, 1830, in Montgomery Co., Ohio, and died at his home near Batavia, Iowa, Aug. 6, 1907, aged 76 years 11 months and 21 days. He was the son of Solomon and Catherine STEBLETON. He was the tenth child out of a family of twelve and is only survived by one brother, George STEBLETON of Ankeny, Iowa, who was present at the funeral. Married Dec. 17, 1854 near Peru, Ind., to Nancy Jane OLINGER. To this union were born two sons and three daughters. One son Frank and one daughter Laura preceded him in death, leaving one son, W. O. STEBLETON (sic. William O. STEBLETON) of Deering, N.D. who was not able to be present at the funeral, and two daughters, Mrs. Geo. W. CORNELL (sic. Mary C. STEBLETON CORNELL) and Mrs. W. N. GLOTFELTY (sic. Carrie Bell STEBLETON GLOTFELTY), residing in this county and an aged companion (sic. reference to his wife Nancy Jane OLINGER STEBLETON) and also a grandson Frank who made his home with them, to mourn his departure. Mr. STEBLETON's early life was spent mostly in Ohio prior to his coming to Iowa in 1871 where he has since resided. He had been failing in health for some time but was still able to be about and the morning of his death he was sitting in his doorway and just as he was called to breakfast he fell over and passed away instantly. His death was caused by heart trouble. He was christened in the Lutheran church and in after (sic. later?) life attended the Brethren church. In his death his companion loses a kind and noble husband and the children a generous and affectionate father and the community a faithful citizen and neighbor. The funeral was held from the family residence Aug. 7, at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. Daniel Holder which was attended by a large concourse of neighbors and friends with interment in the Brethren cemetery.
