His death was very sudden and unexpected, as he had not been ill up to the time of his death. Mr. J.W. Ellis died Friday at his home, at No. 10 Mechanic street. His death was very sudden and unexpected, as he had not been ill up to the time of his death. Mr. Ellis was born in Sangammon (sic) county, Illinois, July 20, 1818, and was the first child of white parents born in the county. There he married his first wife dying in 1867 [1857]. In 1870 he drove to Kansas, settling six and a half miles east of Madison. There his second wife died ten years ago. Mr. Ellis has belonged to the Methodist church, first at Lena Valley and afterwards at Emporia for a great many years. He leaves five children to mourn his loss: Mrs. Childers of Emporia; Mrs. Sullivan of Canton, Illinois; Mrs. Tullis of Fairview, Illinois; Bird Ellis of Lena valley; and Frank Ellis of Emporia. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the Lena Valley church, conducted by Rev. Flickinger and the body laid to rest in Lena Valley cemetery. Wm. Ellis, a former resident of Lena Valley, died at his home in Emporia last Friday, after a brief illness. Mr. Ellis was born July 20, 1818, and was the first white child born in Sangamon county, Illinois. He lived in Illinois until 1870, when he came to Kansas, and was the first settler in the Lena Valley neighborhood, six miles east of Madison. He had been twice married, his wife dying in the sixties and his second wife about ten years ago. He leaves five children Mrs. A. Childers, of 21 Pine street, Emporia; Mrs. Millie Sullivan, of Canton, Ill.; Mrs. Flora Tullis, of Fairview, Ill.; Bird Ellis, of Lena Valley, and Frank Ellis, with whom he lived. Mr. Ellis had lived in Emporia for the past fifteen years. He was a devoted member of the Lena Valley M.E. church and did much towards building up the community in which he lived. The funeral was held at the Lena Valley church Sunday, conducted by Rev. Flickinger.
