He was born August 5, 1834 and lived in German Twp until 1863 and then moved to Champaign County, OH, until he emigrated to Kansas in May, 1868. He was married before going to Kansas to Miss Sarah E Palmer, a native of Ross Co, OH. His remains were buried at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Shawnee Co, KS, February 22, 1889. He was born August 5, 1834 and lived in German Twp until 1863 and then moved to Champaign County, OH, until he emigrated to Kansas in May, 1868. He was married before going to Kansas to Miss Sarah E Palmer, a native of Ross Co, OH. His remains were buried at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Shawnee Co, KS, February 22, 1889. Funeral by JW McChristian.∼Jacob Welchhans came to Topeka in 1868 and worked in masonry about a year. In April of 1869, he was made Deputy County Surveyor, a position he held three years. He came to Monmouth Township in Shawnee County, Kansas, in 1870 and was elected State Representative of the 58th District to the Kansas Legislature, an office he held from 1874 to 1876. Subsequently, he was elected County Surveyor, serving two terms, and in 1880, he was employed by the County Auditor's office. Born Aug. 5, 1834, in Clarke County, Ohio, Welchhans lived there until 1863, when he moved to Champaign County, where he married his wife, Sarah Elizabeth Palmer. They were parents of four children: Mary Welchhans, who died in infancy. Olive Welchhans, who died at age 18. Alice Welchhans Frank, who married Margaret Bowe. Sarah hired hands to run the farm while Jacob surveyed the miles around Monmouth Township, along with some of the schoolhouses and cemeteries. Jacob was also a school teacher, having taught more than twenty-six terms, several of which were at Berry Creek School. He was a member of I.O.G.T., the I.O.O.F., the grange and Shawnee County Teachers' Association. He is primarily remembered for effectively convincing the Board of Shawnee County Commissioners the importance of constructing a stone bridge, not only for the benefit of local residents, but also because it was a highly-traveled state road.
