Description	:	— CUMBERLAND,MARYLAND -- Jacob William Rankin, 89, of Cumberland, passed away on Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Born June 8, 1921, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Samuel Alonza Rankin and Florence Lydia (Wagner) Rankin. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Louise B. (Bloss) Rankin, March 4, 2002; two brothers, Tommy, who died as a child from appendicitis, and James Kieley; two sisters, Betty Hardman and Elizamae Lewis. Read More	— CUMBERLAND,MARYLAND -- Jacob William Rankin, 89, of Cumberland, passed away on Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Born June 8, 1921, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Samuel Alonza Rankin and Florence Lydia (Wagner) Rankin. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Louise B. (Bloss) Rankin, March 4, 2002; two brothers, Tommy, who died as a child from appendicitis, and James Kieley; two sisters, Betty Hardman and Elizamae Lewis. Jake served several years in the Army during World War II under General Patton in Europe. Upon discharge, he married on Feb. 18. Jake as he always wanted called worked mostly at the B&O or now known as CSX Railroad, as a brakeman, backshop worker, boilermaker and engineer on the turntable. He had many good friends from there. He had also worked many years ago at Beverly Sunoco on Oldtown Road. Many of his hobbies involved tinkering on cars, his garden, small game hunting, and telling stories of the war and his youth "the old days" and driving in the country sight seeing, but to us kids, getting lost but having fun. Dad was a different character but we will sure miss his odd humor, love and his orange hat. He is survived by one son, Larry W. Rankin and wife Pamela, Arnold, and their daughters and son, Lynn and John Atkinson and sons, Jonathan and Steven Atkinson, Annapolis, Jennifer Trainor, An-napolis, Larry William Rankin Jr., Ogden, Utah; Susan L. Gaumer and husband William Paul, Cumberland, and their sons and family, Aaron Christopher and wife Tracy and sons, Ricky Bradley and wife Brittany and their son, Aiden Ketterman, Justin Bradley and wife Katie and their son, Steven; Earl Gaumer and wife Megan and their daughters, Jacklynn and Katelynn; Diane Kaye Carmean and husband Thomas, San Antonio, Texas, and their sons, Paul and wife Marlene and children, David and Isabella; Daniel Carmean; Tina Marie Labutka and husband James and sons, Aaron and wife Tina, and their sons, Mark, Mathew, Michael and Adam. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (www.scarpellifuneralhomes.com) on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Fred Iser officiating. Interment will be in the Maryland State Veteran's Cemetery, Rocky Gap, Flintstone. Military honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
