Cincinnati Commercial Tribune Cincinnati, Ohio October 11, 1869 AT Vevay, Indiana, last Thursday morning, Benjamin Detraz, seventy-eight years of age and one of the oldest citizens of that place, was esclating in prepartion for a new roof on a house belonging to him, and had ascended a ladder, brom in hand, to sweep off the damp sheeting, when just as he stepped on the boards he lost his balance, tottered back against the ladder, and fell, striking a pile of shingles about twelve feet below, instantly killing him. New Albany Daily Ledger New Albany, Indiana October 16, 1869 At the funeral of Benjamin Detraz, last Friday, there were in a wagon following the hearse, the following relatives and friends of the deceased: Geo. Kessler, aged 77; John Detraz, aged 79; Francis Tardy, aged 86; Geo. Tardy, aged 81; J. Philip Schenck, aged 82; John Dumont, aged 82; Abraham Detraz, aged 65; and Lewis Detraz, aged 63 --- the ages of the eight persons aggregating 605 years. Fort Wayne Weekly Democrat Fort Wayne, Indiana October 20, 1869 Mr. Benjamin Detraz, whose death from accident at Vevay, is announced, was 78 years of age, and was one of the very few original Swiss settlers remaining in Vevay. Nearly all the founders of that remarkable colony --- the Dufours, the Golays, the Morerods, the Tiebauds, and numerous others --- are now gone, though their descendants remain. Mr. Detraz was putting a new roof on his house, when he fell to the ground was instantly killed.
