DeVries, age 97, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of Harm J. and Hattie (Siebrands) DeVries on September 29, 1914, at home in Butler County, north of Aplington. DeVries, age 97, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of Harm J. and Hattie (Siebrands) DeVries on September 29, 1914, at home in Butler County, north of Aplington. He graduated from the Aplington High School in 1932. On June 27, 1934, Jake was united in marriage with Minnie Lindaman at her parents' home in Ackley. Two years later they moved to their farm southeast of Aplington. In addition to farming Jake drove sand and gravel trucks for Ernie Mathias from 1954 – 1976 in Waterloo, Iowa. He also raised Chester White Hogs for many years before and after retiring from farming in the early 1970's. Jake lived on the farm until 2004 when he moved in with his son, Vern and daughter-in-law, Marge, rural Aplington. Jake was a member of the First Reformed Church in Aplington. He loved working the farm and would often reminisce about the earlier days of farming of picking corn by hand and shocking oats. His pride and joy was his family and he especially loved watching his kids and grandkids playing sports that he never missed. Jake died Thursday, February 16, 2012, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie DeVries on March 9, 1989; his parents; one sister, Frieda Muller; and one brother, Harm S. DeVries. Jake is survived by three sons, Murlyn (Pat) DeVries of Parkersburg, Daryl (Irene) DeVries of Ackley, and Vern (Marge) DeVries of Aplington; two daughters, Jean (Art) Renken of Aplington, and Linda (Wendell) Ralph of Mason City; 21 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 10 great great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 20, 2012, at First Reformed Church with burial at Pleasant View Cemetery both Aplington. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, at the Redman-Schwartz Chapel in Aplington, (319)347-6275, and one hour before services at the church. Memorials may be directed to his family.
